Parents Weekend Report

We had a very nice weekend with Steve at the Coast Guard Academy Parents weekend.
Friday we went to some of his classes. As usual he was very outspoken and participating in everything. Very good teachers, especially Chemistry and English. The we went to his crew practice. He is doing very well with it and will likely be in the Novice "A" boat in the six seat.
Friday night we went to Outback Steakhouse and ran into one of his good friends so we dined together. He stayed overnight with his buddy and his family at their hotel. We went home since we live only an hour away.
Saturday morning we came to the Academy early for parents events and the regimental review and awards ceremony. Very nice as usual. Steve was very sharp and the weather cooperated. Threatened rain held off until late in the day.
After the parents luncheon, Steve had to leave us to sell programs at the football game. He did a great job, selling about 150 in all! Then he was asked to run the scoreboard at the game! He did that very well and enjoyed himself. I sneaked into the press box to chat with him during halftime(actually I have a press pass so I was sort of legit). The Coasties whipped Norwich University 30-16 to raise their record to 2-0! Volleyball girls also won.
It was very impressive watching the cadets march on to the field, along with cadets from Norwich. Once the game began they did some friendly "trash talking" back and forth and when each team scored the kids did pushups to the number of points scored.
After the game Steve decided he wanted to come home. Since we're only an hour away we did just that. But first we took a quick tour of the Eagle.
He got to see his girlfriend and family members. Very good weekend.

Boss,

Couldn't view the pictures, but it sounds like your family had a great time. And I know how great it is to see Steve doing so well. I sure would love to tour the Eagle someday.

Check these out...not edited but some good pics and you get a good feel for the cadets in review, the football game. crew practice, Eagle, our family and of course Steve. Including his sock drawer!

Boss,

It looks like you had great weather. I love how the furniture is Coast Guard Blue. And Steve is a doll. That sock drawer is most impressive - does he know you've shown it to all of your cc friends?

Yes it was great until the very end of Saturday. The colors are good and yes he knows...he's proud of his stuff and it shows!

bossf51: what great pics- do you think they will keep their drawers/closets/rooms looking like that when they come home for a visit? (a mother can always hope!)...those socks- all with the right "attitude!"...impressive!....the eagle is awesome- we have seen her under full sail out in the sound....and don't you just love crew? has to be the hardest sport going!...and did you know that seat "6" is considered part of the "engine?" Congrats to your son and to his fine parents! (and grandma looks like a real trooper too!)

Those were great pics--thanks for sharing them. Hope we're taking similar ones in a year...

heartcross-thanks and I hope so too!

navy2010-you're right about crew...it's a great sport...very strenuous...he never did it before but he was football/track/weighlifting in h.s. and very strong...I was hoping he'd play football here but he decided to try a different sport...he seems to be doing well...very strong...he did a workout the other day, rowing for 60 minutes on an ergometer(indoor rowing machine)...he set a new novice record at 15,432 meters! something like 9.5 miles rowed! Yes he told me about the 3-6 seats being called the "engine room." I can see why.

Bossf51: our daughter rowed throughout HS, and is in her senior year at college rowing D-1 Varsity... back in HS, there was an annual fundraiser where the crew team challenged the football team to an ergathon.....each athlete was "sponsored" for meters rowed with bonus points for time....not only did the crew team out-meter their football counterparts (this with over half the crew team women!) but in the process raised a good deal of money to build a boathouse for the HS...the first of it's kind for a public school on Long Island! As for the football team, they challenged the crew team to an eating contest- and won!
Be sure to tell your son about the Row2k.com site....they host an annual ergothon of their own over the winter training months whereby each athlete can "log in" and submit meters rowed each week at practice (no mater where that gets done...at school, at home, in a gym) over the course of the winter training months....great for motivation and nice prizes awarded too! Best of luck at USCGA and see you on the shore!

ps..you can view some pics of the boathouse dedication by going to www.Row2k.com ...select GALLERY on top menu....under ROWING PEOPLE on right side of screen....select DEDICATION OF THE BORGHARD BOATHOUSE....just shows what many hands working for the same goal can accomplish! So proud of them all! By the way, Al, our coach, turned 80 the year after these pics were taken and still rows competetively....came in 3rd last year at the Head of the Charles Race with his 82-year old partner and coach of a neighboring team...and his son is the head coach of the women's crew team at Rutgers! How lucky were our kids!!!!

Boss51: Thanks for sharing the photos.

Your son's room is impressive. All the furnishings look brand new.

Crew is certainly not for the faint of heart. Motto is: PAIN is JOB #1.

Glad you had a great visit.

Boss! Great photos!! I've just looked at mine and funny how they look exactly like yours! HA! I guess because "our" academies are so small. No way did my son's sock drawer look like that though! I found a candy wrapper under a book too. I was shocked! :) Can't imagine what crazy Mom had sent candy bars! Seems he had hid it then forgot about it. I love the shot of the shoes. We have four like that when my older son had the camera. Whats up with that anyhow? You had commented on the stories the boys had shared with you. I had to laugh. I thought of that when Jamz was entertaining us with his. "Jamz! You're the worst Plebe ever! Drop and gimme 50!" HA! HA! I don't think I have ever laughed so hard. AND when they laid in their racks at night (at attention) they were told to repeat after the DI, "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII I I I Love it here. I have finally found a hoooooooome. I never never never never want to leave it". It was hysterically funny to hear it said in a sing-song kind of manner by a rough tough voice. Cracked me up. There were 100's of stories that kept us in stitches all week-end long. I do believe that he has found a home. And I left there in far better shape than when we dumped him during indoc. I was so very proud of him to have done SO SO well on midterms with all that has been going on too. Will share my photos soon. Putting them on cd to pick out the good ones. May leave the shoes out....LOL

Ok. I finally have a few photos to share with ya'll.

Great pix, Jamzmom! I will bet that you have a few more you'll add this weekend. ;)

Very nice pix...I love the whites I must confess. Didn't like the title caption, tho! See ya on the 24th, 9th, and 12th! CGA v. MMA in soccer, crew and football respectively...

What caption? I didn't see a caption. Did you guys see a caption? Nope. No caption. Must be your imagination! ;)
