my 2010 DS is B split this year. So I will not be going to PW until he is 1c in the fall of 2009.

I have three smaller children whoses ages last year for PW were 10, 6 and 4.

We opted out of a lot of the things as I knew my "little ones" could not keep up and do the activities happily (or with out whining) Such as we skipped the football game, and any parent receptions. We did do some of the food in Delano... and thought it was mediocre at best, but DS thought is was THE BEST food ever! At that moment, I realized how bad it must be.

I think I came to this board shortly before/after PW, and boy was I disappointed I hadn't found this board before then.

For those folks planning to attend Parent's Weekend, it might be interesting to visit one of your plebe's classes. However, most of the rooms are quite full so be sure and have your son or daughter check with the faculty member first for permission to visit, and to see if there is room for you to comfortably attend. The faculty are well aware of the events of the weekend and some have even been known to show a charitable side by dismissing the plebes a little bit early. You will learn a lot about Kings Point so enjoy your time on campus.

The "village" of Great Neck is not exactly representative of either New York State or the United States but they are quite used to visitors and except when the locals are behind the wheel of a vehicle they are for the most part friendly.

I was reading the posts in last year's PW thread and many people mentioned going to Little Italy for dinner. Can anyone tell me how to get there? Also, FYI, Peter Lugar's steak house (in Great Neck) was just rated as the #1 place in the Country for steaks by USA Today.

Burton & Doyle is good, we ate there a couple of weeks ago. Expensive, but good. One note, a single Porterhouse steak can easily feed three people, maybe even four. They pre-cut the steak before it is served so it's perfect for sharing.

Peter Luger's is very good, we had our son's graduation lunch there last year and they were very accommodating, even when we called at the last minute to see if we could move up the time. The only problem there is that they don't take credit cards other than their own--the first time we ate there we left our son hostage at the bar while we went to the closest ATM after our meal to get cash to pay for it! :) An embarrassing moment but easily rectified, it just would have been easier to know about it upfront (didn't read the signs!). Peter Luger's also has a GREAT steaksauce that you can order directly from them by mail, we are addicted to it, and we just found it at BJs Wholesale Club too!

Hi KPMOM06! Loved the update on the kid. Did he pack the surf board?

We haven't tried Peter Luger's but Burton & Doyle was really good. I noticed that when the boy ordered a huge T-bone, that he could barely eat 1/4 of it. Said his stomach musta shrunk during Indoc with the 3 squares a day. Sharing is a very good idea. Very good idea.

After reading trailsendmt's message about not going to Parents weekend because the football team has practice on Sundays, I emailed one of the coaches and he says that are contemplating moving the 2pm back to 6pm (when plebes are supposed to report back anyway). That way all football plebes can enjoy their first liberty in full.

Wow! just spent another cyber hour on JAMZMOM's thread from last year's P/W. Great info...thanks JAMZMOM!!! I can't wait to see my Plebe in 37 days!!! It's just too bad P/W is not on Labor day weekend, as he gets 1 less day of Freedom, unlike last year. We just have to pack in a lot of hugs & talk time in when he's not sleeping in the Hotel ;).

Anyone have a recommendation for a Seafood Restaurant in Long Island? With the weekend so short, my son may just want to hang out on Long Island. We'll see, he just may want to "break out" to Manhattan.

For sea food you might like Louie's Oyster Bar & Grille, 395 Main Street, Port Washington, NY. It used to be called Louie's Seafood Restaurant or the like. Prices are not cheap, but neither are they at Luger's or Burton and Doyle. According to Google it is 7.2 miles from the academy.
WARNING: Thread jack: For those of you from out of town who will be renting cars, I strongly recommend you spend the extra $8.00 a day the rental companies charge for a GPS device. Long Island can be confusing and many of the places you'll want to go will be off the beaten path. An hour saved here and there can be worth its weight in gold when you and your plebe have so little time together. The reduction in aggravation alone will be worth it. End of thread jack.

Last year we spent 3 hours trying to find our hotel and my husband who doesn't believe in asking directions said that we would have a GPS for this year. The highways change names quite often. I would suggest a mapsco and a GPS.

Second that GPS. We brought our portable unit along during Indoc and it was terrific to be able to punch in the destination and let the unit tell us how to get there. As always, take the instructions with a grain of salt. A GPS does not replace your brain. It might get you there, but via a very circuitous route.

Dead reckoning (DR) is the process of estimating one's current position based upon a previously determined position, or fix, and advancing that position based upon known speed, elapsed time, and course.

A GPS is a great idea. I flew out from CA 4 times last year; first time we relied on mapquest, other 3 times brought our GPS like the rental companies can provide. I would never try to drive back there without one now. It saves soo much time and frustration. Long Island can be very confusing, especially on top of traffic, a GPS is the easiest way to get around and definitely worth the money.

I admit to being a little old fashioned about navigation

I guess GPS would be helpful
Never used it in car before

As for restaurants

also a little less glamorous

along the gritty main street thru Great Kneck
Its all urban looking
maybe too tough looking for some
but the people were all very friendly
and food very good and cheap

Breakfeast BEFORE we got down to KP
(we were early)
a nice kinda large inside
Korean place
maybe SOBE ?
clean. busy and interesting
nice big waffles. lotsa meat. good stuff

and a good lunch is at an
old fashioned Jewish Deli
along this same kinda tough looking strip

Corned beef sandwich to die for
Dont know name or address for GPS
but drive slow. youll find it
but on greatkneck main drag
2 miles from kp
