Parents Weekend

I'm told Parents Weekend in October is a lot of fun. What happens? Are there formal activities or is it an informal weekend? Dothey break things up by college (or major)?

I know people who said they have already made their hotel reservations and if you wait much longer you won't get a hotel within 25 miles of PSU. Just for fun I did a search on hotels in the area and most were booked.
Can that be correct? I believe I saw where Parents Weekend is October 2, 3 and 4.

On the Penn State parents' site, is does say Parents' Weekend is 10/2-4/09. Penn State Parents & Families

The schedule from last year is there too. We did not attend last year, so maybe others that have attended in the past could share their experiences.

Have never attended.

About 20 of sons friends were starting PSU the same year and their parents all got hotel rooms early and made plans to attend parents weekend. When the time came all those kids decided to come home that weekend for a break and their parents canceled their rooms and stayed home with their kids.

Obviously doesn't happen to everyone; just sharing what I never saw coming.

We found it enjoyable to pick a good weekend for our son and visit then. Cheaper rooms, easy to find a place to eat and not so crowded in general.

Have gone to two football weekend/games. Very fun for mom, excruciating painful for the husband who hates crowds of any sort.

I'm sure parents weekend is great and someone on this site will fill you in. Just thought I'd share the unexpected.

It is tough to get a hotel on Parent’s weekend, but it is worth it to make the trip to visit your son/daughter - especially if he/she is a freshman. This site tends pull through with availability at several of their properties during busy weekends - Penn State Alumni - Sign-up to Save - Lion Country Lodging.

They also have a PSU Parent Discount which is nice!
