Parents with kids applying to Providence

Hi, just wanted to start a thread for parents of kids applying to PC for fall of 2018 to discuss/show support/answer questions, etc. By way of introduction, my daughter loves PC and has already submitted her application. We have been to the campus no less than 5 times in the past year for tours and open houses. She loves the “feel” of the campus, comes from a small private high school and likes the location, being so close to downtown Providence and not so far from Newport. In summary, she loves everything about the school. Would love to hear from others!!

Hi @xaviermom2017 - similar situation here. I’ll follow this thread. Good luck to your daughter!

Thanks @Saint68 good luck to your child too! The worst part of the whole process is waiting lol.

S18 applied EA and it’s a close second in terms of top choice. I hear great things from a friend who has a junior here. Anxious for Dec 18-20, when we should hear from PC and Nova.

@VikkiG5 good luck! Both great pics!

S18 is applying to Providence. He liked it but was a little turned off by the required Western Civ course. Did your kids have any opinion on that?

S18 was fine wth it. A number of the SLAC had something similar. We visited Colgate and he disliked their required classes so much it was a big part of the reason he didn’t apply there.

Jumping in on this thread even though my son graduates next year. Our understanding is that the Western Civ course is freshman and sophomore year…does that sound right? I don’t think the course would be a deal breaker, but just wanted to clarify. We are just starting our college search and that was one of the things that stuck out about PC. Also, Xaviermom2017, I am guessing by your screen name that you have a student at Xavier? My S19 is interested in that school but we have not been out to visit yet…probably wont get to see it until the summer. .is your son/daughter happy?

Yes - it sounds like they take 4 semesters of WC beginning freshman year.

@Momma2018 - Thank you. That’s what we thought. Good luck to your son!

Can anyone on this forum elaborate a bit on the Western Civ courses? We were turned off also. All I know about it is that the students are required to take a class that meets for 4 days both semesters Freshman and Sophomore year. Is it one particular class that all students take or are there choices under the “Western Civ” umbrella? It seems limiting and current students we spoke to on the tour said they were happy when it was over. None of them seemed to enjoy it, so that was a bit disappointing.

My husband and I graduated in 1992 and my niece is a senior now. When we were there, CIV was five days a week. It is now three semesters, 4 days a week and in the second semester of sophomore year students choose from a list of classes based on interests. Looking back it was a great bonding experience for freshman. It was difficult but also had many benefits.

My daughter doesn’t mind the Western Civ class requirement. She loves the school and acknowledges the fact that it is a liberal arts institution and is looking for a strong diverse education with a science/pre-med focus. Personally, I like the idea that the student body will share at least one class subject matter in common with everyone on campus. At the same time, individual majors will allow for diversity and exploration of interests. That is the one thing my daughter loved most about the school. She felt it was very welcoming, very much an extended family with individualized attention. We visited many of the best liberal arts schools in New England. She considered BC, Fordham, Colgate and Cornell, as well as larger universities from Vermont to Maryland. She kept going back to PC because of the connection she felt with the campus. I truly think the way the student feels about the campus is one of the most important things to consider in making a choice. Mostly every private school and university has integrated certain required courses or freshman seminar classes into its curriculum. I’m sure there are mandatory classes at every college/university that students are not thrilled taking. However, that is also part of life. Most jobs do not come with 100% enjoyable circumstances. It’s a learning lesson to tackle a subject that may not perhaps be extremely interesting. If you can succeed in that class you will excel in the classes you enjoy  Just a different perspective! However, I do get the hesitation - as a high school student looking for the right college fit! Best of luck to all!!!

@5050100 my user name is a reference to an old high school of my older son  No students at Xavier U. I do hear good things about it however! Best of luck to your S19! You have a busy summer of touring coming up!!

@xaviermom2017 - Thank you!

My DS applied EA too - waiting for decisions soon.

This is my first child applying to colleges. Talk about nerve wracking…. She loved PC. Visited the school, shadowed a student, had an interview and loved the family feel. So as a parent I thought it was best that she apply ED if she loved the school so much. Now the waiting is killing me. Not sure if I did the right thing. Does anyone know when we should hear? I’ve heard by December 20th, but not so sure that’s true. Can anyone provide better insight?

Best of luck to your daughter! My daughter applied ED too. All I can share is that my son heard on Dec 18th last year. I’m hoping for around the same time this year. Fingers crossed!

Thank you! Same to you! Next three weeks are going to be tough.

Saw posted on Facebook admissions page that decisions are made and letters are being mailed this Friday! Why mail and not email or portal!?
