@jbtcat Thanks much! My D was placed in Meisner. She’s excited! Hadnt really thought about Greek life at NYU. I I I would be curious to know why your D decided to pledge.
@Fishnlines29 Thanks! She is actually so ready to move on that I think it will be a little less emotional than it might otherwise be. I will definitely try to enjoy all these moments in the waning hours of high school (and my last child to leave the nest). The play, prom, AP tests, graduation…lots happening!
@harvester Congratulations on Meisner! It is very exciting!
My D decided to pledge for a number of reasons: (1) As much as she loves her drama friends, she really wanted to have a group of friends that were not in drama, who could distract her from the madness of the acting world and expose her to other things and interests; (2) She loved the idea of formals, charity events, socials with fraternities, and the events planned by the Greek organizations; (3) It was a great way to make a group of friends, which some people have a hard time doing at NYU since it does not have a traditional “campus” and I think Greek Life makes NYU feel a little more like the traditional campus life she wanted when she went to college. She picked a sorority that was very supportive of her major and understood that she wouldn’t be able to make the same kind of time commitment as other sisters because her major requires such a large time commitment. Depending on her rehearsal schedule, she very often missed sorority meetings and “mandatory” even, but the sorority never gave her a hard time about it. Let me know if you want more information!
@jbtcat thanks again! Funny, my D and I were just talking today about having a more diverse group of friends than just the Tisch folks. She also wants to do that. Do you believe that some sororities are not understanding about conflicts? Also, here’s a basic question, do you know if Meisner is in the Tisch building or somewhere else? I happened to be in NYC yesterday and actually asked the guard in the Tisch building who did not seem to know for sure.
@harvester I’m not sure about the other sororities (they all might be just as understanding), but it was a question my daughter asked when she rushed and was one of the considerations when she decided which sorority she wanted to pledge. I’m pretty sure that Meisner in not in the Tisch building (I don’t know if any of the studios actually have classes in the Tisch building – Playwrights was at 440 Lafayette St.). The guards in the Tisch building don’t seem to ever know anything about what goes on in the building! LOL
@jbtcat - that’s why my D is considering going through recruitment in the fall. She thought she would have no time for it, but has since decided that as much as she likes her studio friends, she wants to broaden her horizons a bit. We initially said she couldn’t pledge b/c of the cost, but we’ve discovered it is significantly less expensive than it would have been for her to join if she’d ended up at a Southern or school with chapter houses. I’m an active alumna member of my sorority, but we don’t have a chapter at NYU so she’s keeping an open mind. We shall see!
D17 has sent her deposits in for NYU Tandon. Now if I could just get her to start paperwork needed for the Moses center! She has ADD and a reading disorder (not dyslexia). I know she’s holding her breath to see which housing she gets into Othmer apt style is her first choice.
This is my first post on CC. I’m finding this site so helpful, especially the 2018 parent forum. I’m also a Texas mom and my son is very interested in NYU - Tandon, which makes this post really interesting seeing how a Texas kid might adapt to NYU. :)) Does NYU have fraternities? Hadn’t occurred to me they might have a greek system. We visited Tandon, but the tour didn’t discuss this. We spent most time with professors and looking at academic program - which really excited my son with their computer science and game/media tech minors.
Welcome @Mom2Son - as you can guess from my username, my kid is an NYU student from Texas & she has thrived! Can’t get much different than Lubbock to Manhattan. She did have some anxiety leading up to the move, and it took a couple of weeks to adjust and start feeling at home, but by the time I visited her in October, she was a bona fide city girl, navigating the streets and subways like a pro & with confidence. My observations are that Greek life at NYU is nothing like we have down here - more laid back in some respects (recruitment is not as intense), but still a good way to build a community which can be hard on NYU’s “campus.” Good luck to your son.
Hi, all! I am entering into my 10th consecutive year as an NYU parent this September. Yes, 10.
First D entered NYU Steinhardt as a Vocal Performance student in 2008. She graduated with her BM degree in May 2012. Second D started NYU in September 2012 and was awarded a BFA in studio art in May 2016. She continued her studies at NYU and is finishing up her MA in Art Education currently. Her last class is July 1, but she attended graduation in May. First D will be returning to NYU in September and is pursuing her MBA full-time through Stern, planning to graduate in May 2019.
I am close to both D’s and feel like I have a wealth of knowledge to share. Feel free to ask away.
Hi @Mom2Son! My daughter just graduated from NYU Tisch and she was in a sorority! And, yes there are fraternities! My daughter loved her experience at NYU and being part of a sorority had a great deal to do with that. They had a “brother” fraternity that they did a lot of socials with and fundraisers with, as well as socialized with all of the other frats. Feel free to ask me any other questions you might have!
