I’m looking for some camaraderie here with NYU parents! I haven’t found many parents on here who have kids at NYU so I figured I would start a thread. My D17 was just accepted to her first choice of LSP and will be spending her freshman year in Paris. She is thrilled!
I'd love to hear about your experiences especially with this program, but also just in general.
I'm a little concerned about her ability to graduate in 4 years since she wants to major in physics. The counselors assured
us it could be done, but she can't take calc or physics first year, so I'm nervous about that.
Have any of your kids attended LSP? Where did they go?
Also any tips on negotiating financial aid?! I know this has a low-0 success rate, but I plan to make that call on Monday!
Hoping some NYU’ers can share experiences on class selection, study abroad, etc.
Hey there. My D is currently a freshman in Tisch - drama major in Stella Adler. I have no experience w/LSP, and we gave up on financial aid so I have nothing to share there. Just thought I’d say hello from one NYU parent to another. My D loves living in the city and has had so many great learning experiences from day 1. Good luck to your D in Paris!
I’m glad to hear your daughter loves living in the city! My daughter may meet her in Fall of 2018 when she’s back on Washington Square. Although she won’t be in Tisch, she is really into Tech - Lights and Sound for theatre production and I have no doubt she will seek out opportunities to help out behind the scenes as a hobby!
I just found out one of my co-worker’s nephew got into Tisch for this fall for Film.
My son will be a freshman - dramatic writing at Tisch. He can’t wait to get started! He loves NY, however we have no experiences to share, except for our brief informational meeting and tour.
@WTXMom and @Hereinca Thanks for saying hi and it looks like both of your kids will be in Tisch (a year apart)!
@Hereinca We are signed up for weekend on the square in two weeks - I’m excited to learn a bit more, get our questions answered and D is looking forward to meeting some other kids from her program.
My S applied ED2 to CAS and was happily accepted. We visited NYU & NE colleges during his junior year spring break. I have been very much inclined to LACs and thought his learning style and character would fit much better there. In fact I thought NYU would be the last school he wanted to attend. It turned out, though, that it became his absolute favorite for whatever reasons and he never looked back. He finally applied ED to NYU CAS, giving up many more opportunities at other schools but we are happy at his decision.
I spent two years in NYC when I was doing an MBA and am very familiar with NYC in general. I am glad that he will spend 4 years in NYC.
We live in Los Angeles and his school schedule doesn’t allow him to attend the Weekend on the Square. (Plus the travel expense, of course )
He wishes so much that he would attend!
Welcome @Fishnlines29! I can’t believe it but my daughter is graduating from Tisch in less than a month. Although she is excited to graduate, she is also so sad because she has loved every minute of her experience at NYU (after the first 2 weeks). Mind you, this was a girl who couldn’t decide between NYU and UCLA until midnight of April 30 and cried that she chose NYU all summer before freshman year afraid that she had made a mistake. She refused to buy any NYU swag and was so not excited (even though NYU was one of her dream schools as far as her BFA it was not the rah rah school with the big football team she thought she wanted). Anyway, after about 2 weeks of freshman year she realized she made the best decision and has not looked back since. She studied in Florence the summer of her sophomore year through NYU/Tisch and had an amazing experience. She is in a sorority and has found that to be a great way to make a really tight group of friends. Please feel free to ask me any questions. Best of luck to your daughter!
@Fishnlines29 Thank you! There is a graduation ceremony for Tisch graduates at Radio City and then 2 days later is the NYU ceremony for all graduates at Yankee Stadium. It’s all very exciting.
Her plans are to be a working actress, so audition, audition, audition!
@Fishnlines29 Yes, she moved off campus senior year into an apartment and will be staying in that apartment. I think your daughter can find plenty of opportunities to do tech work. There is always something going on!
@jbtcat do you mind telling us what your daughter studied at Tisch? Also, did she stay in a dorm until this year? Graduation at Radio City and Yankee Stafium! Wow!
All, not attending Weekend because D has rehearsal for her final H.S. play!
Hi @harvester! Not at all! My daughter will be graduating with her BFA in Drama (Acting). If you are familiar with the studio system at Tisch Drama, she was in Playwrights Horizons studio for 3 years and has spent her last year in Stonestreet Studios, which focuses on acting for film and TV. She lived in 3rd Avenue North her freshman year, Lafayette Hall her second year, and then in her sorority penthouse in Lafayette Hall her third year. She moved out of the dorms for her senior year.
Good luck to your D on her final H.S. play! I know how emotional that can be!
Feel free to ask me any other questions!
(For people who don’t know about the studio system and are interested – at NYU the BFA drama students are divided amongst 8 studios when they are freshmen based on their auditions. Each studio has a unique approach or philosophy. The student is required to stay in the “primary” studio they are placed in for their first 2 years and they can then move to any of the other studios for their remaining 2 years of advanced training (at this point they can also choose from the additional 2 advanced only studios, Stonestreet and Classical).
@harvester The final play! My daughter ran the sound and lights for all of the theater and they had their last musical a month ago. After the show, I was with many of the parents and it really was emotional for all of us realizing it was the last show! ‘Break a leg’ to your daughter and enjoy the moment!
