Parents won’t let me go away..?

Okay, so what do you want to hear? Your parents have the money and won’t let you use it to move away. Too bad for you. There is nothing any of us can do to help you since you don’t like the suggestions of TALKING to them or living at the local school for 2 years. If you think you can borrow $40k to go away to college because some website is reporting that 70% of college kids do it, then do it.

I can tell you 100% of my kids (2 in total) have not borrowed that, and both live away from home for college. They figured it out with a combination of merit scholarships, grants, jobs, and loans. If they lived at home and went to the local college, they’d walk to the train station and take the train every day because they don’t have cars.

Let’s discuss correct thoughts then.

If you’re getting Pell and TAP because your family is hiding income, your parents can be charged with fraud. You can lose your aid and be required to repay it, with interest. You can also have your degree rescinded. It doesn’t matter if it’s 20 years down the road when the fraud is discovered. The college can pull your degree.

YOU can’t borrow $10,000 per year. The federal student loan is only ~$5500/year. AND you can’t take TAP out of state, so that leaves ~$2500 of Pell. The loan + Pell = ~$8k/year. What residential college will you be able to afford on $8,000?
