Parking Permit Question

My daughter’s assigned time to register for a parking permit is coming up in the next few days. She will be living off campus at East Edge. What section of parking would be the best location for her to apply a parking permit. She will have classes in Nott Hall, Doster Hall, Adams, Russell Hall, Science and Engr Complex. Thanks for your help with this.

My D, who is also living at East Edge and whose classes are in Bidgood, Bashinsky, Gordon Palmer and Nott, is planning to register for a permit in the West commuter zone. I think West Commuter includes the 1st floor of the Ridgecrest garage, so she won’t be travelling any further than she did from the dorm last year.

DS will be living at The Lofts and has no clue which type of permit to get. Doesn’t help that his classes are all over.

Curious - not that he would ever pay for it - but are the Reserved an actual single spot or is it like the other permits and is the various lots?

From the look of the parking map, the West commuter zone includes the North ten Hoor parking garage, not the Ferguson or Ridgecrest garage. http://fawp.ua.edu/bamaparking/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2013/08/West-Commuter-Parking-Zones-2014-2015.pdf

Here is the full parking map: http://fawp.ua.edu/bamaparking/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2013/08/main-parking-map-6-20-14.pdf

Last year the west commuter zone did include the first level of Ridgecrest. It looks to me like that may now be included with faculty parking instead of with the west commuter zone. See the green (faculty) permit under Permit Types: http://fawp.ua.edu/bamaparking/regulations/

My S lived in EE last year and used the west commuter. Most of his classes were in Bidgood, Alston or just across the quad. He did occasionally park at Ridgecrest, but that may no longer be an option. He will get the west commuter permit regardless.

This is our first year with our D needing a parking pass. She is living at The Lofts with her classes all at Alston, Bidgood and Nott. She’s obviously going to try for the west commuter zone, but what are her odds of getting it with a time of Thursday at 10:00 a.m.? I’m not even sure what should be her second choice.

@Longhaul I believe Reserved is for Faculty only " Full-time faculty/staff and part-time faculty/staff not currently enrolled as a student may purchase a Faculty/Staff (Green), Faculty/Staff Reserve (Black) or a Perimeter permit. "

@2CarolinaGirls‌ It looks to me like some of Northeast commuter lots would be almost as close as the West commuter lots, so that might be a good choice if she can’t her first choice. Of course those closer lots probably fill quickly, but those with early classs might have a chance  Here is a link to the registration times: http://fawp.ua.edu/bamaparking/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2013/05/Registration-Dates-Times.pdf

Thanks, BamaMomof3. She does have 8:00 a.m. 3 days a week at Alston, but then has to be back there for a 6:00 p.m. two nights a week. I do wish she’d utilize the shuttle from The Lofts, but I can’t force her. Who knows, she might find that the shuttle is the easiest solution a lot of times.

I understand! My D will be at the Lofts this year, but because her studio classes will go until 6pm 4 nights a week, she won’t be able to use the shuttle since it appears to end at 6pm. She wouldn’t make it to the shuttle stop in time to catch the last one.

Oh, the shuttle stops at 6:00? I didn’t even know that. I don’t suppose you have a shuttle schedule? Their website is pretty uninformative.

Here is a link: http://fawp.ua.edu/crimsonride/apartmentroutes/

Each apartment has their own schedule, but it appears that all have their last shuttles leaving campus near 6pm.

Well, don’t I look like a dunce! I had checked out the UA parking pages thoroughly a couple months ago and just never went back to see the updates. Thanks!

You’re welcome! This is also our first year dealing with commuter parking since D has lived on campus for 3 years (and without a car). Maybe parents whose students have lived at apartments with the shuttle service can give more insight into the pros and cons of the shuttle.

I’m hoping for a West parking permit as well, but because this is my first year as a transfer student (I’m a junior), my registration isn’t until the last possible time July 15 at 12 PM.

Is it likely I will get one?

It’s the only permit that makes sense because I’ll be living at Riverfront Village and all my classes are around the quad.

Also, anyone know how often they update the apartment routes? They still don’t have the route listed for Riverfront Village.

My D has used the West Commuter parking pass for the first floor of Ridgecrest garage the past two years. I emailed parking yesterday to ask if the 1st level of the garage would be available for West Commuters this year and I got an email back this morning saying it would be.

Whether a complex has shuttle service or not depends upon the complex. Some have their own shuttle while others pay for service by Crimsonride or have no shuttle. I would recommend checking with the property to see which is the case.

Individual properties also have various degrees of control over their shuttle service. Some require key fobs or identification to prove riders are residents. That’s because parking by nonresidents can be a problem at some complexes where no id is required.

In regards to the reserved lot mentioned earlier the answer is no, individual spots are not reserved but the lot is restricted to those with a reserved pass.

The Crimsonride is supposed to have a service for Riverfront Village, it’s one of the big things they’re advertising, there just isn’t a route schedule on the Alabama site.

Have you tried contacting the CR office?

My advice is to avoid West Commuter like the plague. It is by far the most popular zone with business students (understandably) and Bama parking as a policy oversells the spots. So during the popular class times, finding a spot in west commuter is virtually impossible and one ends up having to go to Perimeter parking anyway. My advice is to take a NE or S commuter spot and take the CR into campus once a day and stay on campus until all classes are done (to the degree that is feasible).

Always schedule 1 hour for time to “commute” from NE or S commuter to the business campus.

I don’t mean to hijack the thread, but I’m curious how far off campus students are living that they need to pay for commuter lots? Since my kid thus far has been closed out of honors housing and won’t be eligible for a suite next year, it looks like he may be stuck living off campus as early as sophomore year, and our preference would certainly be something within walking distance of campus, so we don’t have to get him a car.

I know after my sophomore year in college, I moved about four miles off campus to share a nice apartment with my best friend who was attending a different university in the city. I always regretted that move and felt really out of sync with the rest of the student body at my school, who lived within walking distance. But maybe it’s different at Bama?
