Parking Permits for Commuters

I know parking permits go on sale soon and I needed some advice as to which one I should get. I'm a bio major so I'm assuming that most of my classes will be either on Busch or Cook so is it best to get a deck permit (which is way more expensive) or a surface lot permit? Are the deck permits more easily accessible? What are the pros and cons of each?

That’s a good question. I would try calling and asking directly.

Actually, you do NOT get to choose where you park your car as a commuter. You will most likely be assigned a parking spot at the yellow lot in livingston campus.

See my thread “Parking Permit Trivia”. The difference between the deck and surface permits is that you can park in an enclosed area with the deck permits, while surface permits are for open air lots only.

As a commuter, you can choose a zone, so look over the zones and see where you want to be either first thing in the morning or last thing during the day. You will have to take a bus during the day to get to your classes. You cannot drive between classes.

You can change zones once per year, space permitting, but you can not change into Zone A (College Ave deck).

I am sure some zones fill up quickly (eg College Ave) so apply early to get the zone you want.

See thread for details.

Where did you hear you get assigned lots with no choice? That is entirely not true. You choose a campus you wish to park on, and then you are given specific commuter lot to park in.

Please post further questions in the parking permit thread.

I am a commuter myself who just transferred to rutgers last semester and I was automatically assigned to the yellow lot in livingston. All of my commuter friends were also assigned yellow lot

Those commuters who apply late or transfer in second semester will probably be assigned to Livingston because they have the most space.

TO rualum

I just purchased my parking permit today and you are right.

I was able to pick a different commuter lot.

are you guys buying permits for the campus that’s closer to your home or that you plan to have the most classes at?

I think if you live on campus you will be assigned a permit near your house.

i mean if you live at home

you should choose the commuter lot closest to your classes unless you want to take multiple busses to get to your car.

Because you said home im assuming you live around the area where i would advise you to just choose a lot where at the end of the day you are going to be on that campus and you don’t have to take a bus to get to your car especially if you have work or something to do. If some days you end on different campuses then maybe choose the campus where you end most days?

Just a suggestion, ultimately as long as you get a spot its good.

Definitely pick one where your class ends or start every day.
