When can we sign up to get a parking permit for a parking garage? I cannot find a date on the UT website.

You can sign up any time. The UT Parking office is in the Trinity Garage. You’ll need to go in, fill out some paperwork, and show them your ID. If the garage you’ve chosen is already full, you’ll go on a waiting list until there is an opening. If that happens they’ll email you when your name comes up – which can be 18 months or more for SJG. Once you have a garage permit, you renew online every year.

Is that true for freshmen coming in Fall 2013 as well?

I don’t know the answer to that. If you’re living on campus you’ll want an R permit, and if you’re off campus you’ll want an S permit. I’m not sure how those permits are issued, but it looks like you wouldn’t be eligible to get an R permit for Fall semester of your freshman year. Take a look a this pdf and see if it helps. If not, send them an e-mail.

I have a question about parking, too. I read the PDF about parking types, etc. I think I’ll probably just get a C+ permit (surface lots and garage access at night only), since I live off campus and I don’t really need to be in a parking garage. Plus it’s way cheaper.

The question is this: how’s the parking situation? Is it hard to find parking if you’re just parking in the surface lots? I don’t want to buy this permit if it means I’ll never be able to find a parking space within a reasonable distance of where I need to be.

Dead Poetics,

You don’t need a C+. Just get a regular C. I’ve used the garage once in the year I’ve had a C+ because you can park almost anywhere on campus after 545PM with any UT pass.

As for your second question, you will have to park on the East side of I-35 if you don’t get to campus before 8AM to secure a spot behind the Social Work building. The bus does come to the E-35 lots often though.

Thanks for your answer, propayne! I didn’t know you could park anywhere after 5:45. That’s good to know. I’m all about saving some money. :)

About how often do the busses come by the parking lots? I don’t mind just riding the bus around campus. I just wouldn’t want to ride a bus to campus from where I live, since it’s kinda far.

I’m staying at SRD and am planning on parking at the longhorn lots, is there any close bus stops by my dorm and how long does it take to be transported there and back? Thanks!

So there’s a lot of ways to make this parking thing happen depending on the level of sacrifice you are willing to make.

The Longhorn Lots are east of I-35 next to the baseball field, and with a C pass you can park there during the day. A bus comes every 15 minutes or so to take you to campus…I’ve also walked, which wasn’t fun at all.

Another common thing to do is by the N pass and park at the UT Intramural fields. A bus usually comes to and from there every 20 minutes as well.

^^ On parking at the IM fields: there are lots of other bus routes nearby. The campus buses don’t run on weekends, so getting to and from this lot can be accomplished using several bus lines – all of which stop near SRD. I suggest getting a bike rack and using your bike to get back and forth. I think the IM lots are a couple miles from SRD.

^UT shuttles do run on Sundays but not on Saturdays.

See routes below for bus stops and schedules.

The parking website does not mention these intramural fields, are they open 24/7?
