Hey guys, so I am a little confused by the parking permits at Berkeley. On their website, (http://pt.berkeley.edu/parking/student) it says that student semester parking is $344 per semester, while the Residence Halls parking is $1224 annual, or ~ $612 per semester. What are the differences between the two? If I am living in Foothill this year, which one do I need to get?

Also, is there a way to avoid getting parking permits? i.e. finding a nearby parking spot that is not on Berkeley grounds. I know at my old school there was a street that students parked on if they did not want to pay parking.

Student parking permit doesn’t allow you to park overnight, so you cannot use student permit for residential purpose. You have to live 2 miles radius outside of the campus too. (http://pt.berkeley.edu/2-mile) For your case which you’re living at Foothill, you would be opting for the Residence Halls parking. It’s really meant to discourage you from bringing a car by pricing that high.

You can try to contact the landlords along the apartments on Ridge Rd. and Highland Pl. to see if they have remaining spaces in their garage. Usually they charge ~$80~$120/month which is cheaper than the Residence Hall parking rate.

Two years ago, when my son lived in the dorms, he looked on Craigslist and found a parking space for rent which was about a 20 minute walk away. It only cost him $70 per month.

UpMagic - Cool, thanks for explaining the differences between the two. I’ll definitely look into Ridge Rd and Highland Pl apartments to find parking.

LVKRis - didn’t know craigslist could do that haha. Thanks, I’ll definitely be checking it out.
