Parking situation in and around Foothill?

Title says it all. Are there places designated for or available to those living at Foothill?

Bump (…)

No. Parking in Berkeley is grim. The city divides up the streets into many zones and sells permits to residents which are required for a car to sit in a spot for more than two hours. The permits are not available to students in the dorms. You need a berkeley address other than the dorms and a car registered to that address in order to buy the city permit.

Further, all around the Cal campus they have put in meter spots, which even cars with Berkeley permits cannot sit in without paying. The meter spots have a two hour maximum as well.

Cal itself has parking garages but permits are not easily bought. If you commute you can buy a permit to use the Cal lots but only during the day. Overnight stay permits are only granted to students in dorms for special situations such as disabilities.

Thus, if you have a car at Cal as a dorm resident you will need to be constantly shifting it around in the few open spots at the perimeter of the city.

If you really want a spot some individuals who have apartments have spots that go unused and rent them out to people, so you can try looking at parkopedia.com but it can get expensive.

Often in the range of $80 to $150 per month, more than permits but of course safer and less hassle.

there is a large parking lot behind Foothill

^ but i beieve its permit only parking

Yea, a car in berkeley just isn’t worth it. Even if you managed to acquire a permit for the parking lot (which you can’t since you’re in the dorms), that doesn’t guarantee an opening spot, so if you leave and come back they can (and often are) full. I have a car (haha!) but I live in north berkeley, which is a good 20 minute walk to the edge of campus. Even though parking spaces are more available, i rarely bring it to berkeley because I don’t really use it. Not to mention, the public transportation in the Bay Area (and especially in Berkeley) is so good, there is no need for a car.

Ditch it!
