Parking

Daughter is living in Reid, have been on resident reserved waiting list since early December. Not sure when we will find out about getting a spot there. Now she thinks she wants garage parking. Garland garage is not too far away from Reid it seems. What does everyone think about the parking situation? I’m not crazy about the cost, but I’m willing to bite the bullet if necessary.

Horsesrus,
I haven’t been on campus in a few months, but if you don’t have a resident reserved permit (or garage, now that Garland is open) it can be very difficult to park on the north end of campus. There is very little general student parking on that end of campus, so she would likely end up having to park in lot 56 most of the time and either make the hike down to 56, or ride the bus to 56. I don’t know your daughter, so I don’t know how often she will use her vehicle, but if she wants it easily accessible or plans to drive frequently, you might have to get a garage permit if RR doesn’t come through. I always had close parking when I lived on campus, and although it is nice, I probably didn’t really need the fancy permit, and ended up doing a lot of unnecessary driving for myself and my friends since my car was so conveniently located, so it’s hard for me to either endorse or discourage the more expensive permits.

Thanks for the reply. We’ve pretty much decided that if she doesn’t get the resident reserved, we are going to pay for the Garland garage. My guess is that she will use her vehicle pretty often so it looks like we’ll be paying up for convenience.

We just got back from orientation. The parking person said there are only 900 permits for freshman with a class of 4500. He flat out said not to count on getting a permit. I think the Garland garage is great. It is covered and there are always people around since it is on top of the bookstore.

^ Are you from California?
