Part-time Transfer Student, class outside of SoE

I’ve already completed 2 semesters as a transfer student at the SoE. I’m part time because I also work on top of school and don’t want to be overloaded with difficult engineering courses. I was thinking of taking an additional language class for enjoyment, though it is not a requirement. If you’re wondering why I would take a language class and not just take an additional required engineering class, junior-senior level engineering classes are extremely demanding and I don’t want to experience overload/burnout (I did one semester and it wasn’t pretty); whereas language is something I enjoy and feel I’d be able to juggle between my other engineering classes and work.

The problem is, that would put me at full-time status (12 credit) with the university as a whole while I’d still be part-time (technically) within the SoE and I’m not quite sure how they’d look at that. The other thing is that it appears that Rutgers treats part-time tuition on a $/credit basis, whereas full-time seems to be a flat amount (am I right about this?).

I do plan to call the school with this concern, but I wanted to see if any of you have any experience/insight with something like this. Thanks!

Just because you have less than 12 credits of engineering classes doesn’t make you a part time student for SOE. Part time/full time status is determined by overall number of credits. Many full time engineering students have less than 12 engineering credits in a semester.

Have you considered just auditing a language class, either officially or unofficially? It seems like you just want some form of structured learning and if the credits aren’t important to your academic progress, it may not be wise to pay the full time tuition rate for something you can get for free.
