not really.

eew. grinding is for shady clubs.

even at parties with lots of alcohol flowing I haven't seen super sleazy dancing unless it's people joking around.

(but then, I don't go to frat parties, so shrugs)

Ok, the truth is that nearly all parties involve alcohol. I have never been to one that didn't. Face the facts: over 85% of undergraduates consume alcohol and nearly half of those will regularly drink several drinks in one night for more than one night a week. It's a fact of college life, get over it.

Yes, people always tell you that you can have fun without alcohol and that's true, but in all honesty, if you're looking for the atmosphere with dancing, a lot of socialization, etc. alcohol WILL be involved.

Typical frat party for freshman at Cornell: Several tables set up for beer pong/beirut or flipcup. An open bar where brothers hand out cups or cans of cheap beer. Usually, there is a room or area for dancing, with a DJ playing music, and yes, there may be some grinding going on if you're looking for that sort of thing. Groups of girls dance together and are periodcally interrupted by guys. Then there's usually an area where people are just hanging out, drinking and talking.

At my school, there are no clubs, and bars are fake-ID-only. There are exceptions, of course, but the above description fits a good majority of the parties I went to my first semester at school. After that first semester, there is a lot more variation as people get their own apartments, join frats, and form closer groups of friends.

OK most of you guys must be high school students, Let me clarify

I'm a student at UVa and a pledge of a social fraternity here. let me tell you about the fraternity parties

bouncers at the door check students' ID and ask them if they are 21 (everyone says yes), so bouncers mark a check on your hand and you get in. there's an open bar with lots of kegs where the brothers will pour you beer. a huge dance floor packed with people grinding. YES, GRINDING, AKA "super dirty dancing". People also make out and hook up as they grind. Music is usually hiphop/rap/rock/radio hits. Several kids waiting in line for beer pong table..................

UVa parties can march those of some crazy southern schools ('Bama, Ole' Miss').............................

in the 80s, UVa's Eatern's Party was the third biggest party in the nation. the biggest was in NewOrlean, second biggest was in Boston, and our party, is in a schoool! people use to fly back from California just for that party. We ran out over 500 kegs over 2 nights.

I love the whole "girls are more likely to grind with you if they have some alcohol in them" theory. It's hilarious because I know so many girls (myself occasionally included, I admit) who pretend that they are drunker than they are, if drunk at all, so that they have an "excuse" to heavily grind/make out/hook up with a guy. It goes into this territory of girls still aren't expected to be "horny", that only guys are like that.

hahaha, i love calling out my girl friends who hook up with 5 guys in one night because they were "drunk."

Sweetdreams is right, it has a LOT to do with the double standard that guys who have sex a lot are heroes, but girls who have sex a lot are whores. It's easier to blame it on the alcohol.

Interestingly, I just read an article about how the number of college women who drink is rising. I can't find it now, but I'll try to post it later.

Perhaps this is what you're looking for, trasi? http://www.cornellsun.com/media/paper866/news/2006/02/23/News/Womens.Drinking.Rises-1625404.shtml?norewrite&sourcedomain=www.cornellsun.com

Thats pretty much what its like. I'm in a sorority and that pretty accurate about frat parties but normal parties at houses range from social events with mild drinking, conversing, hooking up to some serious crazy parties.

... for "grinding" (which I think is a degrading word) clubs are your best bet.

anovice,
I'm curious if grindin' is degrading then what you call it?

everyone,
I also have a problem here. Whenever I'm at a party I can't get myself to dancing. I'm shy and probably not that outgoing, but I really want to change. I just don't know how. I want to be able to dance but when I see other people dance and grindin I just think how it's basically sex with clothes on or dry sex as my friend calls it. How can I go from not having the guts to dance to wildin out? Or is it perfectly normal to not dance at parties? If so what else is there to do if you're not on the dance floor, because generally that's the big thing at parties, the dancing.

It's perfectly normal not to dance at parties...

I think by far the best parties are the ones where you grab a bottle of grey goose, and some cheap bear and just chill and have alot of laughs with like 5-10 of your good friends... It's an amazing bonding experience much better than bigger parties...

but if you do want to dance which it seems like u do Balmes, its as simple or difficult as u make it. all u gotta do is check out who you'd like to dance with, perferably their alone, with out another dance partner, just go up and grab their hand and be like "lets dance". honestly its that simply, i guaranteee itt. trust me the admitance rate is higher then all the ivy's combined which is like over 100% :)!! just be confident, and the more you do it the more confident you'll be, groove on my brotha.
