Parties - Ivy Style

Any FORMER OR CURRENT Ivy students - what's your perspective on parties at your school? I know opinions depend on your personality, how outgoing you are, etc etc... but I just want to know:

Do students this smart and dedicated party hard too?

Name your Ivy and tell me what you think - all opinions very much appreciated... I'm trying to decide if an Ivy experience is right for me.

i swear the kids at dartmouth party like no other. I don’t think any other ivy league school goes out more times a week (4) than goes to class (3).

All Ivies party pretty hard, Dartmouth especially. I’m at Yale and I’m not a big partier but you can tell people start going out on Thursday nights and it lasts through the weekend.

it’s college, whether it’s harvard or the local CC. i can tell you my experience a year from now =)

WOW. Parties aren’t any different! I go to MIT and my brother goes to Duke. They’re both honorary Ivies anyways so here’s my input: They’re same as parties anywhere! College is college regardless whether its Ivy or not.

It would be hard to beat the joyous party environment on Prospect Avenue (“The Street”) at Princeton during a Weekend night in the Fall when most of the Eating Clubs are having parties at the same time.

here are a few of the Eating Clubs if you haven’t seen them before:

“Parties aren’t any different!”

I don’t know that I agree with that. I have never seen anything at Harvard that matched the parties they have at, say, Auburn (where a fraternity will hire a band to come and play a concert in their “party barn,” giant themed stages or backdrops are constructed, etc.). Yes, there are probably similar parties going on at every non-religious coed school, but there are dissimilar parties, too.

There was a guy who used to post on College Confidential all the time about how hard he partied at Cornell. He actually partied himself to death before he managed to graduate - the cause of death was acute alcohol poisoning.

Another student at Cornell died of what appears to be the same cause in the last couple of weeks.

I’m not trying to be a killjoy here, but thought I would throw out a cautionary note. I’m sure you’ve all been lectured extensively on the perils of drunk driving. But people who are new to alcohol consumption often underestimate the dangers of consuming several drinks in quick succession.

ha!..you will find 10 of these live music parties going on at the same time at the Princeton Eating Clubs, and if you have passes, you can attend several in the same night…

Are you really going to argue that Princeton is a better party school than Auburn?

NulliSecundus, of course not…did you notice that I used the word “Weekends” for the parties…in addition to weekends, not every student at the good schools can take Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday off to party as hard as the students at Auburn do on a regular basis.

but then again, you might defined what a “party school” is differently…

There’s no real such thing as an Ivy experience, because the Ivy League schools are 8 very different (though all excellent) schools with different looks, feels, and opportunities for socialization (some are in cities, some are in rural areas, etc.). If you took the Ivy label off them and re-sorted all the top 20 universities by similarity of social life and feel, they wouldn’t all cluster together. So I think you need to reframe your question as to what type of experience you want / prefer and then people can answer what top schools offer that type of experience. Some may be Ivies, and some won’t be … and that experience may be better met in some Ivies than others.

Years ago a friend invited me to partake in an evening of frivolity at Harvard. It turned out to be an on-campus play, followed by a “party” that was several dozen people quietly standing around drinking wine and mixed drinks out of glasses made of actual glass. No plastic cups, no beer kegs, no vomiting, nobody screaming for no apparent reason, nobody talking about sports, nobody passing out.

ivies work hard and play hard…state schools just party
