Party Scene Question

Ive noticed 2 kinds of parties at college campuses. Either frat-out ragers (loud music, lots of alcohol, blackout drunk guaranteed hangover) or more casual chill parties or get togethers.
I enjoy settling down with some bros and havign some drinks or a toke. But I dont want these all-night dance ragers.

So what is the party scene like at UChicago? Frat-boy ragers or casual chill-fests?

64 views. no reply? aye

I would like to know too if anyone is interested in answering… i’m inclined to say itll be the chill type from what i’ve heard.

btw, bzva74, considering applying or got in early ?

I will apply. UChicago, from my research, is the perfect school for me.
But socially, I’m very moderate. I’m not the kid who likes to get blackout drunk at frat parties every few days. But I’m not the kind of kid who wants to talk about literature and philosophy every night with friends.

From my experience, the correlation between intellectualism and inebriation approaches one.

In my (first year) experience, there are both types of parties. I don’t really like frat parties, but I do enjoy hanging out with a few people and having some drinks. I’ve definitely been able to do that at Chicago, mostly in the dorms. I went to one frat party and didn’t really care for it (too crowded), but I know plenty of people who like them. I doubt they’re as wild as parties at many other universities though.

Also, how are the campus police with drugs and alcohol? Do people get in trouble frequently or are alcohol and drug citations rare?

Rare, but they seem to be on the rise. Last year there were a record number of first-years sent to the hospital because of alcohol-related issues.

[Rise in alcohol-related hospitalizations spurs adminaction - The Chicago Maroon](<a href=“Delays keep Proof from silver screen – Chicago Maroon”>Delays keep Proof from silver screen – Chicago Maroon)

However, parties will only really get shut down for noise violations, not underage drinking. In general the university police has too many other problems to be worrying about drugs and alcohol, especially considering our students are supposed to be known for their common sense and responsibility.

same experience as insomniac. i also prefer the house parties. but if you want to be blackout drunk, there are places you can go for that. ive been to a couple of those. just not my preference.

I also agree with matthewlnk on the police matter. Our RH’s specifically said that they do not police alcohol at all, and even the university police could care less if you’re drinking underage. I mean, on the weekends, SafeRide becomes a shuttle to various parties. No one cares. Just be smart about it.

There are frat parties, house parties, apartment parties… and one of the frats (Alpha Delt) holds a Bar Night every Wednesday night. I’ve never been to it, but it seems to be the kind of atmosphere the OP is looking for - not a rager, but more like chilling with some friends and drinks.

As for the alcohol policy on campus, it is notoriously lax. Even our RHs don’t care; their only rule is “no open containers” in the hallways. Honestly, no one monitors underage drinking. But it helps to throw a little common sense in the bucket. I’ve heard the reason they make us do the AlcoholEDU course is because of the rise in hospitalization of first-years due to alcohol-related issues. Just be smart about things.

Catherine’s correct!
There are both chill parties and ragers, but I think the lax ones are a little harder to find. Which is okay because I prefer the raging, wild kinds of parties. ;)
