I know this is a bit of a bump but I’m coming to UNC from the UK as an exchange student for a year and I’m living in Granville. Getting a bit apprehensive when reading about Granville being ‘wild’. I like a drink and a party as much as the next person but I like to do it in a fairly chill way and the idea of being surrounded by 18 year olds having their first experiences of alcohol poisoning and venereal diseases sends chills down my spine. I came to university a bit late (I wanted to work first) so I’m 24 and and concerned there is going to be a big gulf between my idea of fun and my fellow Granville residents’ idea of fun. I highly doubt frat parties would be my thing. Just getting a bit worried really, can anyone ease my troubled mind?

Which tower are you living in? Believe me, it makes a huge difference…

East. I had no choice about living in Granville, I got an email a week before the housing deadline saying “this is the only place we can put you, or you can live off campus”.

You’ll be fine in East. East usually has the more mature residents-they like to get down sometimes, but it is nothing like West which has a reputation for being the party tower. I think East has a higher proportion of sophomores and juniors as residents too.

I think sometimes a lot of incoming freshmen have this idealized view of college life that is contributing partly to their dissatisfaction.

Is that in response to my post? I’m aware of the ‘idealized view’ of college life and it’s quite some distance from what I consider a good time. I just want to be able to study and have a bit of fun without teenage frat boys throwing up around me, thanks.

That was not in response to your post at all. Just a reflection.

I don’t know how well a 24-year-old would fit in in Granville, to be honest. But if it’s terrible you can always transfer somewhere on campus or live off campus, I’m sure. No worries, it’ll work out. :)
