Is UVa a major party school? Are hook-ups predominate? Social life without drinking?

Well, I haven’t read those threads mentioned above, but from what I’ve read elsewhere, UVA’s pretty respectable. Since they’re the #2 public college/university in the US and labeled a ‘public ivy’ with rigorous classes, I don’t think many student have time for that type of stuff.

This is untrue. The motto is “work hard play hard.”

Many party hard and work hungover.

Students at plenty of schools like to say they work hard and play hard. It’s clich

I’ve been ridiculously drunk and never been hungover. Must be a white people thing.

I hear about hookups all the time, but I’m not sure if it’s a frequency illusion because the most prominent activities may not necessarily be the most common.

UVA has almost 14000 undergrads and while the streets are pretty busy on party nights, I would estimate that only 10-20% of the student body go out on any such particular night.

I have a hallmate who’s Sikh … so he doesn’t drink. But he dances a lot and acts crazy all the time such that if you didn’t know him, you’d think he drank all the time. He’s so hardcore, he once finished an e-school homework assignment on a Friday night while people took shots in his room and danced to his speaker system. Then he partied stress-free. You know those people who don’t need to drink to party? They’re just high on life!

I also know a lot of Muslims who don’t drink (though I also know a lot who do) yet are really smooth partiers.

I’ll also add again that I don’t drink and haven’t had any problems with having a good social life. I will say that while none of my friends choose to go get drunk for fun, they still drink socially every now and then (so I am the designated driver occasionally - which is fine by me!). Usually, though, we just choose to go out for dinner or watch a movie or go to one of the 23098120398120 events happening on grounds. Complete sobriety for anything other than religious purposes is rare; being able to have a good time without being trashed is not at all hard. People don’t care if you drink or not, as long as you’re having fun with them. This is evidenced by the above post.

Edit @WuTang: Ever seen the MythBusters where they test beer before whiskey and the Asian doesn’t get hungover?
