Pasbal - Financial Aid / transcript question

Pasbal - Financial Aid Question

I apologize for asking you directly, but it appears that you are very knowledgeable regarding
administrative procedures @ FSU and I’d sincerely appreciate an answer—

Currently a Sophomore @ FSU taking 13 summer credits for A term classes with a 4.0 GPA for all classes taken @ FSU. I am taking a three credit advanced math 4000 level math course that I honestly believe that I may receive a B and naturally I am attempting my best to maintain my 4.0 GPA.
Question-
1. If I drop the course before June 21, how will this show on my official FSU transcript ?

Yesterday I received out of the blue a FSU grant for Summer term in the amount of $ 2000.00.
If I drop the course, will I forfeit the grant money ?

THANKS

I know you are asking pasbal but here are my 2 cents:
I would not even bother dropping a class unless you know you are going to do poorly. I’d relax and not drop that class. I honestly find it absurd you’d even think about dropping a course over a B, but that is just my opinion. I know for upper-division student’s if you drop a course within the appropriate time frame you can drop w/out dean’s permission and it will not even show on your transcript…it will look like you never even signed up for the class.
Buuuuut you’re a lower-division student which means you may need your dean’s approval which trust me I HIGHLY doubt they will approve of you dropping a class over a B. So if your college requires dean’s approval (College of Arts & Sciences, requires dean’s approval for lower-division) then you’re SOL and you will have to settle with that horrible horrible grade…a B.

:P

about your grant, i’m sure pasbal will have an answer to that one.

Whoa… I feel kinda honored that you asked me directly. I’m glad that I can be helpful.

To answer your questions:

  1. I don’t think the class even appears on your transcript if you drop it before the 7th week (or with summer sessions, the prorated 7th week) deadline. So if you drop it by June 21, it should be like you never took it at all.
If you drop after the 7th week deadline, I’m pretty sure it appears on your transcript as a W, and then if it’s after the 12th week and you drop it appears as a WD.

I don’t know whether you’ll have to forfeit the grant money. I honestly don’t know the specifics behind the FSU Grant during the summer. I randomly got one last year and I’m pretty sure it was the first time I’d ever seen it.
My first thought would be that FSU might try to make you pay back the grant if you dropped the class, but then they also may not. I would plan for them to rescind it, and then be ecstatic if they didn’t.
Personally, I’d lean towards them being okay if you stay above 9 credit hours, as I believe that is considered full-time for summer. I only took 9 credits last summer and got it, so that’s why I think it should be okay to drop the one class.

Just keep in mind that if you do drop the class, you’re still liable for tuition and fees; you don’t get a refund. You’ll pretty much have to ask yourself whether paying out $500+ for the class already, and then again (if you take it again) later on is worth losing your 4.0. It’s a commendable goal but financially it may not be worth it. You’ll have to decide for yourself (and quick!).

Hope this helps. :)

And papertiger chimed in while I was writing my reply. That’s great advice too. If you have to get permission to drop the class, I doubt they will let you do it if you are still going to get a passing grade (unless you were borderline passing, like a C-).

You might also look into changing to taking the class S/U (pass/fail), if possible. Depending on whether the class is required for your major you might be able to take it pass/fail, and then it wouldn’t impact your GPA if you passed the class. However, if you’re taking a 4000 level math class, I’m not sure whether it would be a course you’d be allowed to take pass/fail.

As long as you are in 6 or more credit hours, you will not have to return the grant money. So since you would only be dropping to 10hrs, you will get to keep your money.
