I'm currently taking an R&C course (College Writing R4A to be specific) and not doing very well in it. Although I am required to take my R&C courses for a letter grade, would it be advisable for me to take this one pass/no pass and then take an easier one next semester? Plus, I'm very busy with technical courses this semester so I can't really devote much time to this class. Would this be wise?

If I were to take the class pass/no pass and didn't pass, how bad would that look on my record? Would it matter in terms of graduate school applications? I'm currently Chemical Engineering but might switch to Mathematics, Physics, or Chemistry down the road.

Thanks!

I would advise against doing so. Some graduate schools view a NP as ‘F’. Also, you would just be wasting your time this semester and it wouldn’t be much fun re-taking the course. I took College Writing R1A my freshman year so I understand how difficult it is. There is still a lot of time left in the semester (more than you think!) so take it as an opportunity to talk to your instructor and get some help. If your instructor believes you are committed to doing better, you will more likely end up passing the class.

I doubt graduate schools care about a P/NP from non-technical courses.

Additionally, its far more likely to receive a P vs. an NP

Just P/NP it if you’re doing terrible. I.e. lower than a C.

If you at least do the work and type somewhat coherent essays, you’ll pass the class.

As for the case of NP looking like an “F”, sure it does, but it doesn’t drag down your GPA like a D+ or lower would.

Would much rather have a NP than a D+.
