Passed Housing Deadline? Housing & Class Reg. Qs

I had just got my acceptance off the waitlist not too long ago, but it says that the 25$ fee for housing was on May 2nd. Does that mean that I might get housing anymore?

If anybody can clear this up for me, that would be great.

Also, another housing question. I am currently enrolled in CLA, but I've decided on a major and I will probably try to switch colleges in the spring to CBS. Should I try to find a housing with similar likes, or stick with other CLA students?

And, when we register for classes at orientation, with the limited spaces, how is it decided who gets into those classes and who doesn't? (Aside from seniority). And is it usually more specific classes that get filled, or general classes? I figure 1st year is mostly general classes, but does that change depending on what college your going to? Even though I'm in liberal arts, I would like to take more science classes, if possible.

Finally, what exactly happens with AP testing? The AP tests I took junior year I didn't opt to send to my colleges, so when am I supposed to send them by? And when do we know if we can opt out of certain classes and skip gen. classes?

Thanks in advance!

Another question:

When it says - Frontier Hall - Biology House, or Bailey Hall - Pre-vet Med. House, or something similar, does that mean that people who are in CBS or in a pre-vet program are only allowed there? Or they have first pick there?

I haven’t been able to get my Student ID# yet, so I haven’t been able to get to the housing. But I would still like to get into a house where I am comfortable in. Thanks! –

Wasian…Congrats on your admission to U of Minn!! Regarding your questions…

May 2nd was the last date to submit your $25 deposit to guarantee a spot in Housing. According to their website, students submitting the deposit after May 2 will be offered Housing on a space available basis.

Which college you are enrolled in at the U doesn’t affect your Housing location unless you select one of the Living Learning Communities (LLC’s). If you live in any of the non-LLC dorm halls, you will be living with students enrolled in all the various colleges (CLA, CBS, CFANS, etc.).

Biology House, Pre-Vet, etc. are examples of the LLC’s on campus. Those particular areas in the respective dorms will be students all with a common major (Biology House) or interest (Students Crossing Borders) or social preference (Substance Free).

When you fill out your Housing Application, you will list preferences for dormitories, room types, and any of the LLC’s that you are interested in.

As far as course registration goes, I believe it is first come, first served and you’ll sign up for classes at your orientation. Once you get your Student ID# you’ll be able to pay your Housing deposit and Admissions confirmation. Once those are processed you should be able to fill out your Housing App and New Student Checklist, which will allow you to schedule an orientation date. I’m not positive how quickly classes fill up, but you’ll probably still be able to get into the classes you need…just not at the most optimum times of day. You may want to search through the older threads on the U of Minn forums to see if there’s any info related to class scheduling.

For your AP scores, you should send them to the Admissions Office if you want to try and get credit for them. In addition, when you’re filling out the New Student checklist there are spots on there to fill in AP Test Scores. The website says you should do both. You’ll also have to take math and chemistry placement tests prior to arriving for orientation. Based on those scores and any AP Test scores, I assume when you’re registering for classes at orientation they’ll place you into the appropriate level class.

"

So what is the chance that I will not be bale to get a spot in housing? And if so, what would be the next step for me? Thanks!

Wasian…I couldn’t say for sure what your chances would be, but I imagine they’ll be able to get you into on-campus Housing somewhere. It may not be your top choices as far as dorm or room type, but my guess would be you’ll be alright.

As soon as you have your Student ID# fill out your Housing App and get your Housing fees paid and you should be Ok. The deadline for the full housing deposit isn’t until May 15th, so you’ve still got time there. You can call the Housing Office as well and they can give you a better idea of where you stand. Good Luck!!

Wasian - is you student ID number listed on the very bottom of your admissions letter?

Yes, it is, but it’s not the same as my internet ID#, and I don’t know the password either. I eventually got on, though, so we’ll see.

One more Q :c, I signed up for orientation, but is there any way I can change the date, since I realized that this year’s AP scores won’t be coming in 'til after that orientation date? And for the prereq tests that we need to take, do we still need to take them if we send in our AP test scores?

Edit: On my profile, it says my major is undeclared. I’m sure that I stated my major before, so when/how do I actually declare the major :<?

And, my tuition and financial aid still hasn’t come in the mail yet. Does anyone know when it will?

“I signed up for orientation, but is there any way I can change the date”

I think you can change the date on the same page where you signed up initially. CLA might have more choices, but CSE only has the very last date (7/13) open.

I’m not sure if any of the dates are after AP scores arrive.

Tests - You should take these, even with your AP scores. When I took them a 5 years ago, they were online, so you should be able to do those in an afternoon or so.

APs & Class Sign-up - You’ll meet with an Academic Advisor during Orientation to help you pick classes. If you tell them which APs that you have taken and that your scores are forthcoming, they should be able to help you plan accordingly. Also, you can always change your classes later, up to a couple weeks after the term begins.

Major - You’ll have to declare that later, but no rush. You don’t need to declare your major until you have 60 credits, and it is generally recommended that you take at least an intro class in that field, so you know that you want to pursue that course of study.

Switching to CBS - While this is most definitely a possibility, you will have to make a formal request to transfer from CLA to CBS. I would work with your Academic Advisor at orientation to determine the next steps.

Housing - There is generally enough housing for everyone who requests it, and they actually turn study rooms into rooms for students to live in, if necessary. I did this my first semester, and I had the biggest room in the entire dorm - it was pretty great. If you do not get housing, there is a generous amount of housing near campus in Dinkytown, Marcy-Holmes, and Como neighborhoods. I would check Craigslist if necessary, but I don’t imagine it will come to this.
