im a phenomenal snowboarder but not on a team. been doing it for 9 years. but not on a team just for leisure. can i use this in my college app at all?

You can put it on your extracurricular activities, since it is something you do outside of school. I don't think you need to say that you've been doing it for 9 years, though. If you want, you can write your personal essay about it, but you don't have to.

The extracurricular portion of the application is a place for you to tell schools what you do with your spare time. This is where you would let them know how many hours you spend snowboarding. I realize some folks look down on listing "fun" stuff, but I disagree. This is what you spend your time doing, and it is part of what makes you who you are. You want colleges to see that.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am the mom of a guy who spends his time snowboarding & playing guitar! :)

^^^would this apply even for top colleges? or do they expect our extra curricular to be curing cancer?

Stop exaggerating with the "curing cancer" nonsense. You know that you're exaggerating. If snowboarding is something you do quite often (2 hours a week or more), it can go there. That's what the activity list is for--to list the activities you do.

so it doesnt matter if its not a school activity?

lol I'm just saying can you put things of that nature on an app to a top college or will they expect things like captain of the blah blah blah team or something really significant? i know those things can't hurt but are they necessities to be even considered?

john6391, I just answered your question. Frankly, I'm a bit annoyed that after I said

"You can put it on your extracurricular activities, since it is something you do outside of school"

and

you asked this question. It's like you don't even read our posts. We spent the time to answer your questions, so read them. And use your common sense before you ask something like, "so it doesn't matter if its not a school activity?"

lol im sorry wasnt thinking

i did read all your posts and im grateful for them im just tired and currently finishing some paper work for my dads law practice.

Along with listing it as an EC, you can also incorporate it into one of your essays. A few years ago my D chose the "any topic" prompt and wrote an essay that combined her love of baking and mountaineering (both out-of-school activities) to reveal how she looked at the world. It wasn't "curing cancer" but it was good enough for the "top colleges".

your Ds a mountaineer. has she climbed anything
just curious i climbed eldorado peak last summer and next im climbing mt rainer and summer of sophomore year of college climbing mt mckinley and after that (assuming i can come up with the funds which as of now i doubt) Everest.

that could actually make a great essay if done right
