past school suspension

When my daughter was a sophmore she was suspended from school for smoking weed on campus. She was duly punished, and the incident brought to light other problems - depression, ADD - for which she underwent ongoing treatment. Over a year later her grades are up to a B average and she is doing well in every respect. Now she is a junior and we are looking at colleges (studio art major). She is plugging away at her portfolio. I just took a look at the Common Application and saw the question about disciplinary issues. She has to write a statement explaining what happened and how it affected her.

Has anyone else out there faced a similar problem? I certainly don't want her to be penalized in the college app process for something she did a while back and paid for already. She is not a repeat offender or a chronic behavior proboem.

There were two recent threads (2010) addressing issues in your question as I recall, so you may wish to use the site’s “search”. One, I think, was under “common application” and this scenario and it was a very commented on thread, i.e., active. Hope this helps.
