I wanted to ask how useful are patents in College Admissions
for eg: i have 3 patents in line along with 2 innovation and trademark rights....will that help

LOL patents can give you a slight advantage in terms of “extracurriculars” but what really matters the most is your high school grades

I think patents (having them, not necessarily being in line for them) would give you a much greater edge, depending on what they are, of course. Assuming they show decent innovation and creativity, I’d think they’d be quite an asset.

all my patents are in the field of science
they have helped to bcome an ISEF national finalist in my country
will that help?

Yes, its something that makes you unique.

I’m sure it will help, but it’s not going to make you automatically get in.

well it really depends on what type of school you are applying to
if you are applying to a school like Harvard or MIT, I’m sure many students have impressive resumes so it would be harder to stand out there. You would definitely stand out though at a slightly lower level private school.
As for public schools, they really could care less what extracurriculars you do. Some schools don’t even require you to list extracurricular activities, many large public schools base their decisions on GPA/SAT scores only.

i guess it would help me at techie schools like MIT

in case you don’t know:
reach = a school that you really want to go to or are interested in but do not think that you have a very high chance of getting in (not impossible chances but very slim chances)
match = a school that you really want to go to or are interested in that you think you have an excellent chance of getting in.
safety = a school that you really want to go to or are interested in that you are definitely sure that you can get in.

i guess all the ivies are reaches for me :(

For you and everyone!

I would say patents would be very impressive for a high school kid. When you say you have “patents”…have they actually been awarded…something which took 4 to 6 years for mine…or have you just started the process? If you have actual patent awards, how old where you when you applied…12 or 13?

well all my patents are in the process of being published…
while i have actually been sponsored by the Government of my country to do reaserch
plz chance me

just to clarify, I really didn’t factor the “patents” part into the reaches/matches/safeties because I am not quite sure how they would affect your chances at each school, I just used your GPA/SAT scores. Also most ivy league schools are reaches for everyone unless you have an A+ average haha

bumpity bump
