Patterson & Study Abroad

Am I correct in understanding that the UKy Patterson Scholarship does not cover study abroad? Does anyone here have experience with the Patterson + studying abroad and could share how the finances worked out? Were there other good options for funding (departmental scholarships, etc.)? Thank you.

I do not see a mention online for Study Abroad in the Patterson information for future students. Current students have a stipend for Study Abroad. I could be mistaken, but it is my understanding that current students can use the scholarship toward expenses if they study abroad. I have sent a private reply to your question to me. The most accurate information would be available from the University itself. The admissions staff went above and beyond in answering our questions. The Patterson Scholarship is an honor to receive, and is life changing for many of the students who receive it.

I mis-understood. Patterson and study abroad are compatible.

D is looking into going to Florence this summer. She’s been to some meetings. We’ll see how it goes.

@AuntieFascist, is your D a Patterson recipient?

Yes.

For the class of 2020 and beyond, Patterson will no longer include the $2000 study abroad stipend. While I’m as disappointed as anybody, there is plenty of study abroad funding still available. I applied for and received other study abroad money for research, skill development, etc. There are also generic study abroad scholarships. I even received an email last week inviting me to apply for a study abroad scholarship for honors students who had maintained a 4.0. It’s not hard to find study abroad money as long as you keep reasonably good grades and submit applications by the deadlines!

We received official notification of the Patterson award in the mail yesterday, and feeling very fortunate.

Congratulations @Midwest67 !!!

So excited to hear that your official letter has arrived. It was such a relief to us when that paper was in hand. If you decide to attend a Merit Weekend, book a hotel early, as places close to campus fill up fast. Also, plan for things like the foreign placement exam early in the weekend, as it can take a while to complete.

Whether or not this ends up being your choice, know that it is a great opportunity. DD could not be happier here. DD has just signed up for housing for her Junior year. I cannot believe how quickly time flies! She loves the campus as well as her overall experience. She is loving it at UKy, even with the recent day off due to weather. Food lines were long, but she did not starve. I feel that the long lines fostered a sense of community. (Trying to look at the bright side.)

Congrats, Midwest67!! You’re gonna love it!!
