Pay Deposit and Change Mind??

Question about how this transfer thing works. I have a family member who has been accepted as a transfer to what has been her dream school since junior year in h.s. She's become unsure of herself. She is almost finished with her freshman year at a nice LAC and has been very happy. She is doing research this summer that may convince her to stay at the LAC rather than transfer. Is it OK to pay the deposit at the new school to hold her place, change her mind later in the summer and return to her LAC? When must she tell her LAC that she isn't coming back? I fear she has been so swamped by the close of the school year that she hasn't really been able to consider her options.

This relies on an almost infinite number of variables - what the LAC is, what the dream school is. Assuming the dream school is highly selective, she should consider that there's no telling how many people applied and got rejected - people who probably wouldn't have stuttered at an acceptance letter. I don't know if the principle of applying as a transfer candidate is a factor here.

As far as logistical stuff is concerned, i.e. if she pays the deposit at the transfer school and changes her mind, I would count that deposit as good as gone. The deposit is essentially a monetary promise, and if it's broken, it's broken. It's worth calling the transfer school and asking, I suppose. As far as notifying the LAC, I can relate the following: I know that when I sent my transcript, my registrar called and told me that I have until the first day of the next semester to withdraw formally. This could be the same or different from the college in which your family member is enrolled. Making a decision soon will be the least costly, but she'll have to contact both schools if she's in doubt.

Yes it is definitely possible. I did that with a college and had all my housing set up, but decided to go somewhere else after I got a different acceptance. Just know the deposit will not be refunded.

You could always call, and postpone the due date....
I just called a school i have been accepted to and got a 2 week extension.
at least 2 week extension gives some time to think about :)

Just do it; don't listen to anyone telling you about the philosophical side of it and how it's "immoral" or even rude to tell them you're comming and don't go, yet a month ago you were the one begging the obnoxious admissions office for a simple status update and getting run-arounds. Sounds immoral of them for telling you to make a decision within a couple of days during finals week, don't ya think? Let's say you place a deposit, and don't go--what can they possibly do to you?

You might not be able to come back to the school if you place a deposit and ultimately don't go, but she's graduating so it's not like she's going to change her mind next year or something...

I'd pay it.

^ YES. the admissions offices of all these colleges treat us like crap...do what you need to do.
