Paying for ND

Okay, now that I have submitted those FAFSA and CSS forms, I have been completely focused on the next step~paying for ND! Our EFC came out really high and ridiculous...I'd love to see how we are supposed to pay that much! But I am wondering, how will the final package look? This is our first child to do this and so we are total rookies in the game. Does anyone care to elaborate on how this all works? Will ND put together any loan, work, scholarship packages? Or will we be on our own in the end? I know it varies from student to student, but any info would be great~thanks!

Yep, I would like to know that...I'm waiting for the family tax stuff to be complete before filing...my parents claim that is MUCH easier once the tax forms are complete...I know that that stuff went to the accountant today..hopefully we will file in the next week or so. I know when my parents had one in college...the EFC was very high...with two in college...it got lower...of course, with three of us in college/grad school...we're hoping for even a better EFC. Of course, my parents are worrying that I might get a lot of aid the first year...and in my second year my older siblings will be out of grad school and the aid will drop off. It would be awful to have to leave ND after one or two years because of money. But I too, would like to have some answers to your questions....what about it experienced parent FAFSA filers????? Also, isn't the CCS very similiar to the FAFSA?

I've asked these questions myself and it seems people are hesitant to answer them. Our efc is about $9000. Per their website they will assign workstudy, loans, and then what they can give along with additional outside aid. They say they meet 100% of financial need I wonder exactly what that means. We will have three in college. One will be in the 5th year of a five year health profession program which results in a MAster's degree. Even though she pulled off her BS in 3 years and this will technically be her 4th year since she will have her BS she is considered independant as a graduate student so ND catdog I don't think you will be affected by your siblings moving out of graduate school as they are really not counted for you anyway. WHen my first went to college the EFC was 14,000 he went to a school with a cost of attendance of 46000. He got a 10400 need based scholarship each year and work study which only helps for spending money and a stafford loan with interest deferred. We had to figure out the rest. When number 2 went in to a $37000 school our income was the same and our EFC for each of them was a little over 10000. She got a Merit scholarship of 10,000/yr for 5 years so we figured she would get the same need based aid the first got not so she got nothing else except a $1000 perkins loan and a Stafford loan and work study her lesson she worked hard for the MErit scholarship her brother got the same money for doing nothing. So now I did the Fafsa for number three and our EFC as I said is about $9000 for her and #1 kid and #2 who worked hard through college gets no additional aid and we can't get parent loans for graduate level school so we are not sure how we will handle it. She has a 10,000 scholarship left (she lost 10,000 cause she finished early) and she will be an RA which gives her housing and food. My Plus loan just hit $100,000 for the next 30 years. We started out not having any loans till a contractor took over $200,000 from us and left us with a shell of a house for a year so we had to go further into debt and now we can no longer give any of the EFC without the PLUS loans. I pray ND will be generous and I figure God takes care of the lillies of the field and it will all work out. But I would like some reassurance from and ND parent/student. Good luck

ANY ND PArents/Students with some insight??????

My son is a freshman at Notre Dame.

I own a small business, and because of a fortuitous financial circumstance, our EFC last year was $0. My son's financial aid package included scholarships, grants, work-study, and loans, for a total aid package of $36,075. We had to cover the difference between the aid package and the Total Cost of Attendance, which is $44,390 (or thereabouts).

For the first year, of the total package of $36,075, my son has a Perkins loan of $3,000 and a Stafford loan of $2,625, and we incurred about $8,000 in costs outside of the financial aid package. Though our Federal EFC was $0, the CSS Profile must have allotted assets which left us with the $8,000 gap.

What does this mean for you? I'm guessing, but I'd say that you'll need to cover the $9,000 out of pocket and likely a bit more depending upon what the CSS Profile shows.

A note for Irishcali - the Office of Financial Aid will help you to assemble the financial aid package. You'll need to choose a lender if loans are part of the package, but the ND FinAid website has links to their recommended lenders and applying for loans is very simple - much easier than paying them back, I'm afraid. :) If work-study is part of the package, your child will need to find a job on campus once he/she arrives. Any ND scholarships or grants are handled in-house. I've found the Financial Aid staff to be empathetic and very helpful.

I'm facing uncertainty this year as well - my second son is a senior, and God willing, he'll be a Domer, too.

Good luck!

Thank you Radionicist , I hope our package comes close to yours. Other schools are offering her so much that it is very tempting . I couldn't believe our plus loans are over $100000.

bump up for more replies

If the contractor disaster happened recently, you can include a letter to ND about the situation and they may waive some of your EFC and profile contribution. Even if they give you Perkins (which they are free to do if there's need) it's way better than PLUS.

It's worth a shot.

Thank you I included that info in my CSS profile. I know there are certain parts that are not sent to every school but I think that part goes to them.

Taxes finally done corrected Fafsa sent EFC down to $8500 each for two kids

do they give any loans other than perkins and stafford in the financial aid package (like PLUS or ND)? My parents will let me get those but won't take PLUS or co-sign the ND, and I'm not sure what's going to show up when I get that letter in March.

bump........

Daughter is second year domer,EFC is 100 %, remortgaged the house :( and put off retiring for another 4 years.................. Guess what worth every penny. :)

haha tell my parents that

I guess ND does not have any type of fixed rate tuition plan?? Just noticed that George Washingtion University's tuition, etc. for next year has topped the $50,000 mark. But, as I understand it, students currently enrolled pay at the rate to which they enrolled. Of course, ND's tuition has risen also, but I can't find anything on the website regarding this type of plan for ND. Anyone know anything about this?

ND AL;believe they do have a tuition payment plan, regarding the cost at enrollment it does not remain at that level it will change dependant upon the need to raise costs recall one year housing /room board were cited this year I think the letter indicated something like overall rising costs.......
