Paying for UC

I applied to Berkeley, LA, SD, and SB. My EFC is 0, and my twin brother is also going to attend college next year.

I didn't apply to any scholarships or anything, so assuming I got into a UC (say, LA or Berkeley, which are my top choices), what kind of aid will I be looking at? How much should I expect to take in loans every year?

What do you think my financial aid package will consist of? How much can I expect from grants, such as Cal Grant and Pell Grant? I'm planning to live on campus, btw.

Thanks.

If you are a CA resident, I would say approx $5K in loans, $3 - $4k in work study and the rest would be grants. If you are offered a Regents Scholarship, you probably would get 100% grants as long as your EFC remains 0.

Good luck to both of you!

UCLA met full need for us. Agree with Fresno Mom on the likely breakdown, except I believe they cap work study at $2,500. The loans will likely be the good type: Perkins and subsidized Stafford loans, that don't accumulate interest during school years.

How do I apply/get a Regents scholarship? What do you mean "met full need for us"? Does that mean you didn't have to take out any loans?

"What do you mean "met full need for us"? Does that mean you didn't have to take out any loans?"

Meeting full need means that the college puts together a financial aid package for the full difference between the Cost of Attendance and the Expected Family Contribution. Loans are part of that package.

scroll down to page three of the pdf for examples of UC finaid, based on different income levels: work study, summer earnings, loans and grants. You don't apply upfront for a Regent's -- Cal and UCLA find you and ask you to apply; other campuses award money based solely on your app.

I got an e-mail from Berkeley about a scholarship that I can apply for. Is that the Regent scholarship?

They will tell you what sholarship it is.

There are also Cal Grants... you want Cal Grants.. they cover full tuition. I think they only work for Sophomore onwards b/c you have to submit a GPA verification form.

If your a Junior/Senior there will also be SMART grant avaialbe to you if your majoring in Sciences.

These are the grants you could get

ASG--max 750
PELL--- max 4050
CAL A--max 7000 (rounded up, its just whatever the tuition is)
CAL B- max 1500 (living expenses)
SEOG--max 4000 (dont count on it, funds are low)
UNIVERSITY GRANT (laons come b4 this is offered)

Perkins Loan
Stafford Loan
Plus Loan

I am a junior soi am not listing loan maxes as i dont know what they are for freshmen.

they will also notify you of ALUMNI scholarships, which are not Regents.

Apply for the Alumni, ask your high school if you are the Byrd nominee, hope for the regents, but even so, I would say plan for about 1/2 in grants & the other half in work study & loans. You can convert a portion of your loan offer to work study if you like. They say it costs about 25k for a year at Berkeley. The packages I have seen have offered about $10-13k in grants and the rest loan & work study, for people with $0 EFC.
