My orientation is next week...and i'm still debating on whether or not I should bring my car with me to college.
I plan on getting a part-time job while in school, so I feel having a car would be convenient. But, the thing is, parking passes are expensive. So, is paying $267.00 a quarter for parking worth it?
Thanks! :]

Are you sure your school doesn’t have adequate transportation already? At my university, everything on campus is within walking distance and the city and the school share the same bus system so we can get around town easy (for free, though its probably in our student fees somewhere). I’m opting not to bring my car because 1) $250 semester plus insurance and gas could be spent elsewhere 2) parking is terrible 3) would only drive to go home.

Are you sure that’s the cheapest option? At my school there are multiple different parking passes which range from $74 to $1500-some a year. That price seems prohibitively expensive for most students.

If that’s really the cheapest you can get then you should evaluate how much time you’ll save by having the car there. If you’ll save 6+ hours a week then it’ll probably be worth it, otherwise I’d recommend saving your money, given you don’t have enough money to purchase it without asking.

For that much? Nooo way. I only took my car to college because my school has free parking…

Look around for alternate parking.

If you could park across the street from your campus to save on that money, but still have the freedom of having a car.
The small walk would be worth it in my opinion.

I paid about $170 for the whole year but I guess that’s because I’ll be living off campus.
$200 per quarter seems ridiculous though. I know at my school they have a much cheaper pass where you’re only allowed to park on the edges of campus a good 20-30 minute walk away from classes (though only a 5-10 minute walk from the dorms). You should look into whether your school has cheaper options as well.

You have to look at your school and see how the culture is. At some schools, even ones that aren’t in big cities, you really DON’T need a car. Everyone walks everywhere, everything you could possibly need is right there. No one has a car, it’s just an unnecessary expense.

Some schools you might need one though. You have to just look around and see, but don’t automatically assume you need one or you’ll be that much more free with one. Look and see how your school is and what people do.

i pay almost $800 for a yearly parking permit at UCSD. I live on campus, but it’s definitely a luxury to have a car. if you need it, i would say shell out the money. just remember not be dependent on others for rides if you don’t bring your car.

Thats way too much as far as i’m concerned, but I do understand that with the job it would be helpful. My school gives students access to the city bus for free so were generally pretty well off. I use the bus to get me wherever I need to go. If your school does this I highly reccomend you consider it. As long as you get used to the bus system and learn how long it takes to get to your job then you shouldn’t really have a problem.

i paid $350 for the entire year for indoor parking. outdoor parking is even cheaper at only $110. however, this past year, they closed the outdoor parking lots a few times due to too much snow. i lived off campus this year so i just parked in the drive way for my apartment and shoveled myself.
