I'm a college student and want to buy a car,but my college doesn't want freshmen to drive or have a permit. Is there an excuse I could use that would make them let me have a car. I really just need it to get to a basketball gym, because tryouts are at the end of september. But the school has no gym or even weight room avaliable on campus. I go to Southern Unversity A&M. I just want to park by the dorm not park at the school and parking spaces are not a problem there are spaces all over the place just 24 credit rule is in my way. SUGGESTIONS PLEASE!!!

Can you park it OFF the campus altogether?

You could always ask an upperclassman to buy it for you.

WWJD? Seriously, are you asking how you can lie to the university to get your way?

You know what is much cheaper than buying a car, gas, parking, insurance and maintenance just so you can go to the gym? Call a cab or hire one of many senior students who would probably love to make money on the side being your chauffeur.

Most colleges offer Reserved Parking Permits, which are often sold to student via their college portal online. It will cost you more - maybe a lot more, but it might work. To give an estimate, I bought mine for $50/10 weeks, which is pretty cheep, but I guess other schools go up to $500/semester or more.

If the op does decide to do this, make sure you check your school rules.

I knew several people who did this (or had an older sibling they shared a car with), and none of them got caught. BUT if you’re caught doing this, you can lose the right to live on campus in subsequent years. And the person doing the buying can lose their current housing + future housing + ability to buy parking passes. Not to mention the fines.

Tl;dr: just be careful if you attempt to deceive the school.

thanks but the one gym that has basketball courts is used by offices and classes and the weight room is used by the football team. They are building a new basketball gym, but that won’t be done until summer 2013. The closest gym is passed a freeway so it’s not walking distance. I’m just going to see if I can get one for dorm parking and not close to classes. There is nowhere off campus to park. Also the campus shuttle doesn’t go that far.

How about contacting the basketball coach and asking what other team members are doing?

they all have cars and I’m not on the team yet I have to tryout. So I don’t know any of them.
