Penn 2014 RD Thread

of course i havent given up on calc. yet. haha this is the only class im giving my all. i dont see why im doing so poorly =/

dontstopbelievin I completely know how you feel!!! Calc was a struggle for me too. Especially once we got to series and sequences, yuck. I was pretty much tearing my hair out every problem set, it was really bad.

I honestly think Calculus/geometry is a completely different way of thinking from Algebra/Algebra II, so it’s not like just because you’re good at math, you rock at all the different math subjects… maybe that’s just me though. Math was never really my thing either. It’s one of those subjects that I can get an A in, but I constantly feel like I’m doing really badly anyway. Like history.

No Penn interview for me either… ahh. Did we ever figure out if there was a specific deadline you had to apply by in order to get an interview?

i have my interview this weekend :D

i think my chances for penn just got screwed up this marking period.

Canary, I submitted my application on 12/31/09 and I still got an interview. Someone said earlier that it just depends on if there is a rep in your area…that person seems to be right.

The HS transcript that was sent before winter break was finally posted to DS’s app today.
Finally, application COMPLETE!!!

EDIT: With my 300th post I’m finally a “Member”!

i struggled with calculus too haha. uphill battle all the way

clinegirl: i havent had my upenn interview yet but i did have a yale interview yesterday evening. it was actually really nice. if you’re not socially awkward, you should be able to find lots to talk about. my one main advice would be to think of many questions in advance to ask your interviewer but also dont bombard him/her with questions. it just shows your interest when you ask them stuff

im gonna beast the AP exam because of my teacher, but her marking period grades are gonna kill me.</p>

interview this saturday! wooo

Good luck with your interview tomorrow!

thank you!

“I honestly think Calculus/geometry is a completely different way of thinking from Algebra/Algebra II”

I actually loved Calc b/c it was so much like algebra, but with a twist… i absolutely hate stats

Haha but Calc’s “twist” is so substantial that I don’t know if it can be called a variation on Algebra, or even similar to Algebra at all. But again, maybe that was just me.

(I hate stats too. I don’t think I’ve ever been in a more boring class.)

quote

I agree. AP Reading Comprehension never fails in inducing sleep.

hahaha guess what guys?! i loved stats! maybe it was my teacher that made the difference haha

calc is just one of those subjects…

^agree, I had never gotten anything below a 95 in a math class (all honors) before this year and i barely squeaked out an 87 this semester in Calc

question: my counselor sent in my transcript and rec a while before the deadline - Penn Portal still hasn’t “received it” yet - should I be worried?

FOR STATS: it’s soooo formulaic. The written responses etc. are the easiest parts! AP is just handing you the 5 if you know the “secrets of stats.” I think the teacher has a lot to do with performance. If writing is your weakest section, just go to AP central from college board and notice the pattern in their writing. Multiple choice: just use common sense and memorize the formulas.

stats is supposed to be the “easiest” AP math, but it’s just so boring… and all that writing is just a pain; also my teacher writes the problems and often forgets to include important info, leaving me wondering half the time whether I’m just not getting it or if she messed up

calc is challenging in terms of the math (which I prefer) while stats is more just about understanding the type of problem

I’m changing the topic here, but I don’t think my question warrants a new thread so here it is: if both my parents went to Upenn law school, will that count as legacy/help me in any way?

^ Yes, but you’ll receive the most benefit if you apply early decision.
