Penn and ACT

Okay, the common app asks us to super score the ACT...I'm a little confused. I know Penn is on the common app but I was under the impression that they did NOT super score.

I just got my first ACT back yesterday (retaking in December and sending in late if good), and I'm fairly disappointed. I got:

E - 32
R - 33
M - 36
S- 28!!!
Composite = 32...one more question right and it would've been a 33.

Now I know 32 is in middle %50 percent at Penn, but I was hoping for a competitive edge. My SAT is in the same category with a 1500/2170. So does UPenn super score? If not, should I send just my SAT to them, or both? Thanks for any of your help, it's much appreciated!

Penn does not super score. You need to send in ALL test scores anyways, so you don’t have the choice of sending SAT or ACT. They only look at the highest score.

Mmmmk cool, thanks for the heads up. I was a little worried because my last SAT has all three of my highest scores, and the other one I took was pretty dismal in comparison…but I guess since they’re just look ing at the highest score it’ll show improvement on my part.

Thanks for your help!

I think Penn does superscore.

From the admissions website:

“We do expect that many students will have a higher composite during one sitting, with an individual score on one of the three sections higher from another administration. Again, Penn will take the highest of any individual scores from any administration.”

Ortsac is pretty misinformed…

1) You send in EITHER SAT I + 2 SAT II’s, OR the ACT
2) Yes, Penn superscores the SAT.

They do Superscore the SAT, but I think they do not superscore ACT. Its weird and I think a lot of schools are like that, but I maybe wrong. All I do know is that a majority of schools including Penn superscore the SAT.

@ theSarcasm

Actually, I think you ARE required to send in both ACT and SAT scores if you choose to take both tests.(You’re supposed to submit all test scores.) However, you’re only required to take either the SAT I and II’s or the ACT w/Writing.

Actually, the wording is rather ambiguous:

Some people argue that it is all administrations of only the test you choose to submit, others think it is simply all administrations of all tests.

I would say send both in this case. The only instance I would not send both is if one was vastly better than the other.

Few schools superscore the ACT. I don’t believe Penn is one of them

At one of the Upenn info sessions, the Admissions officer was specifically asked this question whether ACT is superscored and she replied YES.Wonder if she really meant that,or if she mistook the question being for the SAT.I have yet to see any of the Ivies acknowledge that they superscore the ACT.I do not see why they do not,if the SAT can be superscored, why not the ACT?

Wow, I had no idea that this answer was so much sought after…I thought I was alone.

I’ll call admissions tomorrow if I can remember. I’ll be pretty busy but will probably have posted the answer to this question by 5/6ish.

I’m pretty sure you are required to submit ALL scores, and they superscore only the SAT, not the ACT.

@kandalf, I tend to agree with you… but now my curiosity is sparked. I’ll just give them a quick 5 minute phone call tomorrow.

Thanks truzzil…will look forward to hear what you report back.

This is kind of an odd thing to bring back, but I’m curious about this.

Under my impression, they will take the highest individual score of each of your sections AND the highest composite, but they won’t recalculate your composite with your highest individual scores, am I right?
