Can some one explain how this works?

You can either choose to eat in the dining hall or get a meal to go. If you tell the lady who swipes you in you want your meal to go, they give you a to-go carton and a cup. You can dump as much food as you want into the box and put a drink in the cup (though people put anything from fruit to ice cream). If you choose to eat in the dining hall technically you cannot leave with anything. I, personally, have left with an apple or two, or a cookie, or something else small. You can’t leave with plates of food (unless you got your meal to go). I doubt the workers will stop you from putting soda in a water bottle for later use. I remember hearing about someone my freshman year who tried filling one of those gallon jugs with milk from the dining hall. That person was caught, but I think the only consequence was dumping the milk and being told not to do it again.

when do we have to turn in our dining stuff?

so you can’t fill up your thermos with water at 1920 commons? you have to buy water bottles?

Commons has soda fountains, so it would be slightly awkward to fill a thermos with water, though no one will stop you. I’d suggest going to a water fountain or using the sink in the bathroom of your dorm (if you don’t like Philly water buy a brita). Pottruck has surprisingly good water. I don’t know anyone who has filled a thermos with water from a dining hall, not because you can’t, but because most people get their water from sinks in their dorms.

When you say 101 days to the first semester does that include weekends or just “school days”?
Thanks.

Why would it be school days (monday-Friday) if we are almost one with school…

in resposne to Susiebra, I meant 12 meals in terms of “sit down, eat in a cafeteria”. I eat cereal or a granola bar, so I’ll just buy that myself. Also, I plan on having weekend meals either out, or at wawa/panera/subway type places. That’s why I said I couldn’t imagine eating more than 12 meals a week.

Venkat: But I thought that you can’t fill your thermos with soda in 1920 commons because isn’t that technically like taking something to go because you take your thermos with you??

Anon: glad to hear it.

It’s like going 5 miles over the speed limit. Technically not allowed, but no one is going to stop you.

2 meals a day and living at Hill. You want the Red. A little less than that means you want blue. I had Red first semester and had 30 meals leftover. then Blue second semester and ran out of meals.

Don’t forget the food carts, they are the best. You don’t want to have too many meals in the cafeteria, it’s boring.

Susie, from when I was at 1920 Commons, the soda was kind of in the back corner (facing away from most people) so you shouldn’t have a problem with that anyway.

do dining dollars just let you have non-cafeteria meals that are untaxed??? also, is there DIET soda in 1920 Commons???

They had Diet Pepsi when I was there. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t taste the same as Diet Coke :(

I’d say they’re equally bad when compared to regular coke =)

i think if i have to stay up late and study, i will want to have pepsi. I would personally prefer diet.

You can swipe a guest into the dining halls. I think you could also swipe a meal for him to eat takeout with you too. They’ll just give him his own box for him to fill up with food.

I’m not sure when you need to make decisions by, but if you don’t make a choice in time they automatically put you on the Liberty Plan.

the due date for the Dining plan decision is June 22 :)

SusieBra,
About your friend visiting, I think during Penn Previews the dining people said you got like 10 moocher meals to bring your friends, family to the dining rooms. Not sure though.
