Penn or UPenn?

people who do not go to penn might call it "upenn," but no one on campus ever refers to it as that. it is always called Penn.

ppl familar with it call it Penn, haha i especially checked that part in my why penn essay....when u google university of pennsylvania, the website says: Penn: university of Pennsylvania

I used both Penn and Upenn..just casually on my why penn. I was fine..

Yeah I heard it's supposed to be just Penn. And said Penn in my essays too.

Spend 30 seconds on campus, and you'll understand it's Penn. I've ranted on this subject before

During the info session last year they said it is officially Penn, not UPenn

Is this really that important? I called the school Penn, but I don't think that's a sign that i'm more aware than the average applicant about Penn's culture.

Frankly, if the story about the admissions officer who rejected people who called it UPenn is true, I would have some serious doubts about the quality of their admissions staff. Rejecting someone based on that kind of information is ridiculous.

The Penn vs. UPenn is practically the most basic piece of information one acquires when learning about the university. If an applicant doesn't know the difference between the two, it's a huge sign that they don't know anything about Penn. Calling it Penn doesn't demonstrate that you know much about the school, but calling it UPenn demonstrates that you don't.

Hellohoya - it may not be a sign that you're more aware than the average applicant, because the average applicant knows a good deal about the school :-P

god its so irritating because people dont even acknowledge the accomplishment of getting into penn when you say you got in to penn, thinking it's just penn state or some random state school. oh well, if it was about the glory i guess i would have applied early to yale or stanford

A state school? THE HORROR, THE HORROR!!!!!!

This thread encompasses all that scares me about Penn. Both the "OMG I CANT BELIEVE PEOPLE THINK I GO TO A STUPID STATE SCHOOL LAWL I'M SO MUCH BETTER THAN PENN STATE" thing, and the "if you don't know why it's called penn and not upenn, you don't know anything about anything" thing. About 20 people have shared that exact same wonderful sentiment and neglected to explain themselves. Do you guys do this on your English papers?

"Everybody knows why Hamlet refuses to kill Claudius. If you don't, you don't deserve to read my paper."

well it hurts pride...

imagine if you went to mit and every time you talked about mit, people assumed you meant umass

or caltech, but people assumed it was just a calstate (not even a uc school)

the whole penn / upenn thing is a branding issue, and penn is somewhat to blame for that (picking upenn instead of penn.edu, for example) - the school has attempted to rectify it somewhat, which is the point of this thread.

it's like calling nyu the university of new york - people can do it, fine, but nobody at nyu would do that (and then there would be confusion with the suny / cuny schools)

Cry me a river. UMass is an amazing academic institution, as is Penn State, as is Cal State. So is Penn, but somebody thinking you got into Penn State is not as huge a blow to your reputation as it is to your ego, don't worry. State School kids are smart sometimes, too!

Just say "no, Penn in Philadelphia." That's it. Nobody insulted you. Chill out, and stop being pompous.

University of New York from NYU? What are you talking about? Penn's name is THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA. Putting U before Penn is a completely logical abbreviation, just like UMass, UMich, UConn. Yeah I know those are all crappy terrible state schools, but again, get over yourself.

Calling NYU University of New York would be like calling Penn Pennsylvania University. AKA, not relevant.

penn is called pennsylvania university in certain research publications and rankings.

i fail to see the pompous attitude espoused here - insisting people call us by our proper name isn't trying to put penn state down (at least not for me), it's just a matter of respect. excuse us for having a reasonable (not fanatical) amount of pride for our own school? how do you think kids at cornell college feel when they're mistaken for cornell university students?

i don't believe i have anything to get over here. perhaps you do. you're imagining hate (and an attitude of being insulted) where it doesn't exist. if you're so unhappy about this issue, you may be better off expressing those opinions elsewhere, and not turning this thread into a flamerant.

I think areyouserioussss is really the only one...

i say UPEnn hahah ahah

Penn. Unless you tack on the State, people should be smart enough to realize that it's not Penn State.

penn! but yeah...website/facebook group calls it upenn. i guess it's for clarification that it's not penn state?
the sweatshirts and t shirts and stuff all say PENN on them :)

The irritating part about the whole thing is that the first thing you have to do is explain to all of your friends/relatives/teachers that although the Nittany Lions are having a great season, you have not been to a game and have not met any of the players because you aren't even going to that school.

I guess it would be analogous with your name being Michael Bolton. When you tell someone that your name is Michael Bolton, the first thing they're going to ask is (forgive the Office Space quote... but I saw one in an earlier thread) "Are you related to that singer guy?" and I'm pretty sure that this would **** anyone off, just like it ****es off the guy in Office Space -- hahaha. Anyways, it just feels like embarassing that although you are going to a very respectable school like Penn, most people don't even acknowledge it and you're stuck being a Nittany Lion.

omg, areyouserioussss lumped UMich in with UConn and UMass...what a disaster

And sorry, but I'm not paying 50k+ a year to be confused with some average state school noob.

sometimes i like to pretend that i go to penn state - its usually with people who wouldn't know anything about penn state anyway (other than it exists) , so i can make up some good stories

I love how people discuss this every few months. The official nickname espoused by the school is Penn. I think we're known to ESPN as Pennsylvania/Penn. To most people we're UPenn to avoid confusion with Penn State. Why would we want to avoid confusion with Penn State? Well because we're not Penn State. Other schools that fight confusion are Ohio University (not Ohio State, my graduation speaker actually had to make this distinction), Miami of Ohio (not FL), and others. Is it wrong for a college to want its own name?

I actually said this to someone and they said "O, I didn't know Penn State had a campus in Philly. Well maybe you can transfer to the main campus later." I felt a tad insulted by that because I'm probably smart enough to have been accepted to Penn State's main campus back when I was a senior.
