I am a 5 time track state medalist and have received letters from many Ivys telling me I am one of their top recruits. I have about a 4.4 GPA, hundreds and hundreds of volunteer and community service hours, and am a two time xc captain. My SAT and SAT Subject scores are not the best though. 1830 is my SAT and I scored 630 on math 2 and 500 on world history (I know its really bad; I didn't study and had a rough night the day before). Do I have any shot at particularly UPENN, or any other Ivy league? Also, should I try the ACT next fall instead with the writing portion? Thanks for the help!

If you are being recruited, you have a shot. If you have time to study to try to boost your score, go for it.

Your best bet as a recruited athlete I heard, I can’t say I know, is to apply early decision.

Thank you. I forgot to say I served as president of our junior class this past year, if that makes any difference.

I know nothing about athletic recruits since my son is not at all interested in sports but he says kids as early as junior year get recruited at his school and already know where they will be going. According to Naviance, I can tell that they do overlook low GPA and SAT scores for athletic recruits. Yes, even at top Ivies and elites. One girl was on the lacrosse team and went to UPenn last year.

So what exactly was the purpose of these letters other than to inform you that you were one of their top recruits? Have they talked to coaches at your school? Invited you to their school?

Basically I am “one of the top recruits in the country” and they will continue to stay in touch with me. I have not scheduled any visits yet, since this is not permitted as of yet (July 1st). I am not the best guy in the country or anything. I have four 7th place medals at the state meet and one 5th place.

Nothing wrong with plying your talent into a good school’s accept. But here’s a problem:

“1830 is my SAT and I scored 630 on math 2 and 500 on world history (I know its really bad; I didn’t study and had a rough night the day before).”

What do you hope to get out of college?

Do you want a real education? or a diploma plus some more ways on how to skate by, doing mediocre academic work?

You’ll prolly get into a good school. But when you’re in front of grad school admissions or hiring managers, their purpose is to sniff out the folks who skated by. You want to shed that soon.

Good luck to you

Believe me, I have. Junior year was just very difficult for me was a lot of it. I plan on taking academics very seriously in college. Also, just today I received a letter saying I was accepted into national honors society, if that helps at all.
