Penn State Altoona OR Hofstra University

These both schools are probably total opposite but I got accepted to Altoona and Hofstra University. I would've accepted University Park if I got in but knowing that I got into Altoona (Biology major) instead, I'm not sure if it's still a good school like UP because a lot of the high ranks go to UP. And now I also got Hofstra (private school, biology major) which is an okay school (rank 126). I would like to know how is Altoona compared to Hofstra or is Altoona the same as UP academically? I want to majoring in Biology while studying for Pre-dental. Thanks!

You’d have to look at the specific program you want to join, in this case bio.

Tutition in hofstra is more expensive, but if you’re instate you can probably get it down substantially with NY state aid, federal aid, scholarships, grants, etc. I would probably choose hofstra just because of the field.

Its worth it to go to Altoona for 2 years and transfer to Univ Park and graduate with the Penn State degree.

Whichever is cheaper to be honest.

I think Penn State is cheaper even though i live in New York City which is only an hour away from Hofstra. I’m still unsure if Altoona is a great school in terms of academics…

It doesn’t matter - you will get good grades at Altoona, transfer to UPark and graduate with a Penn State degree that will help you with anything.
Hofstra is just not a good school.

I’m kind of leaning towards Penn State too now…

@kblitz, do you currently go to penn state UP?

I also checked the on-campus housing for Altoona and it says they are unable to offer me housing because of high demand. I can either:

1) Add my name to the Waitlist

2) Call Admissions Office to transfer to another campus (possible University Park!) I called their number and waited an hour but the machine kept telling me to wait on the line…

3) Pursue housing off-campus

I’m going to Penn State UP starting this summer. You can also try and say that you would be willing to the summer program at UPark or go in Undecided and they might be able to offer you.

@kblitz, could you tell me what major you chose?

I’m not sure if choosing undecided would interfere with my Pre-health advising for Pre-dental. But I would like to try. I’m also having trouble with housing but I will be sure to call them later. Have you register for housing yet?

Public relations.

Dont think it would interfere if you know what classes you need to take for pre med

When you accept your offer of admission, it comes with housing.

It doesn’t include housing. I just called their office and they told me there are 150 students on the waitlist. And I haven’t visited Penn State so I’m not sure if I should pay the $200 nonrefundable Enrollment fee!

It is included for students who are at University Park - sorry I didn’t make that clear!
I would definitely visit first or see if any of the other campuses have housing??
