Penn State DISCUSSION THREAD Fall 2022 Admission

Thank you so much for the response. Super helpful. Could you tell me some reasons your kids loved the summer start? It seems like it could be a lot of fun with a light courseload.

Oh no! I hope your D isn’t too disappointed. PItt and Udel both have great nursing programs. My D was OOS, 4.27W, 3.9U, 1400 SAT.

Thanks! She’s already committed to Pitt so she’s fine, it’s more the reality of rejection  Get used to it kiddo!

That’s great! Mine still has a few more to hear from so we don’t know what to expect :grinning: Congrats to your D!

Nursing at PSU is ridiculously competitive. And I’m a bleed Blue and White Penn Stater - Both my husband and I and three kids so far have gone there as well as a gaggle of nieces and nephews - so it may not sound logical when I say what I’m about to say
BUT -

For nursing (as a nurse myself working in Pittsburgh), there are MANY more opportunities for clinical experiences in a city school, and especially a medical city like Pittsburgh. Even with as much as we love Penn State and dislike Pitt (lol
great education at Pitt, just an inborn rivalry  ), I told all of my kids if they wanted a direct medical program that needed clinical experiences to look at Pitt rather than PSU.
Your daughter will be great - Pitt nursing is highly regarded in the area and she will get really, really great clinical experiences
and she won’t have to move to a different campus for a year like you do at Penn State.

Summer start gives you a great way to get familiar with PSU classes and campus without the jarring start of fall. My kids loved the Leap program, made tons of friends in the summer and knocked out 6 easy credits. Summer in state college is fun - especially without a full classload and a whole bunch of freshmen! As I said, my daughter was accepted for Fall 2022 in the college of IST, but switched to summer and doesn’t regret it at all.

Is the LEAP program what summer start kids do? Or is that something separate?

LEAP is what most summer students do. You can technically do summer as a freshman without LEAP but I don’t know why anyone would. LEAP gives you the advantage of taking a “grouping” of classes so everyone in that “group”, or Pride as Penn State calls them, is taking the same two classes at the same time. You get to know the people in your classes because they are in the same dorm area and in the same classes. You can pick a pride based on your interests
so there’s an engineering pride, or an IT pride etc
and you get one general ed out of the way (usually English 15 unless you are transferring that in) and then one pride focused class.
