Certainly there is a financial benefit to summer start. They aren’t the only university doing it, but they have been doing it for at least 40 years, so nothing new.
As those of us with kids who have done it, there are huge benefits to the student - which we see from past experience. It is a shame it gets such a bad rap.
Just from this thread, it seems like there have been Fall acceptances, summer acceptances, and 2+2 acceptances, with no rejections reported. I might’ve missed one, but I’ve spent a lot of time reading this thread!! As a side note, I haven’t seen an deferrals either from Penn State (as in put into the regular decision pool). Many students in our area who applied to other colleges, like VT, are deferred.
My daughter was Accepted 2&2 a couple weeks ago. She changed her major and put in for a reconsideration.
Has anyone had experience with reconsideration and how long it took to find out. I know admissions said up to 6 weeks but thinking maybe since she reconsidered early enough it could come by Jan 1.
DS TO button disappeared last night and at Midnight was accepted to Smeal Summer UP! We were debating if he got in for Fall switching to Summer because I think it’s a great opportunity to gain confidence going into Fall. Now the decision is made for us.
We are thrilled for him. Both parents and grandmother are alumni. that we can share this with him.

Best of luck to you all and thanks for the support through this stressful journey!
Penn state staff are given two weeks off this year - from basically Dec. 17th until after New Years. I assume that also includes admissions, so there will be a “dead period” starting in about a week.
Not trying to disappoint you, but set expectations about what is happening on campus. Not sure if you will get a reconsideration decision before then.
Accepted last night, Smeal UP for Fall 2022…around midnight. The button stayed the whole time…never went away. I was watching hourly for it to go away so I was happily shocked when I just got an acceptance!
DD checked her portal an hour ago…SHE IS IN!

My 4.1 (4.0 unweighted) gpa daughter got 2+2 and I’ve wondered about the test optional aspect as well. Major likely played a role, which is too bad because she isn’t completely married to that major at this point. Though I see in the postings someone with the same major and a lower GPA accepted, so not sure about that. She has enough other options that she won’t go to the trouble to ask for reconsideration with a different major. Her test scores were just okay…1300. Did not think they would keep her out though. She has a good bit of leadership, sports, etc.
Mine did not consider summer start, Completely off the table, as summer in our state is the best time to be here
