Penn State DISCUSSION THREAD Fall 2022 Admission

Wouldn’t it be too late for EA ?
I also submitted application this afternoon, but haven’t received any link yet…very afraid that I can’t meet the deadline

Hope you received one today! We submitted at 5pm and received a portal link by noon the next day. SRAR submitted same day as portal link created, so I feel back on track.

No, if you applied rolling you won’t hear until FEBRUARY. EA hears by Dec 24, priority by Jan 31, Rolling and everyone else after that…Call and see if you can change your application to EA since you are in before the deadline.

@kmapitt said they applied EA.

Yep, in general, giving a little extra should help.

just wanted to point out that Penn State has given all fulltime employees (so, presumably Admissions) an extra week off for winter break – University will close down as of Dec 17, so offers ought to be out a bit sooner than the 24th,I think. it was a very splashy announcement here

Then when do you think the decisions will start coming out?

What we have seen in the past is the tippy top applicants seem to go first (think 14 AP courses and a superexceptional gpa), and then offers by college. What order seems to vary year to year? You won’t see any real movement until Thanksgiving, so nobody panic. The length of your wait has zero to do with your chances of getting a specific result.

If you said you’d come for summer, yes, you have to.

If you are accepted at a campus and not UP, they already considered you for UP

Experts, @jlhpsu , what else have I missed?

Yep that pretty much covers it!

To everyone else -
A few random thoughts:

~Summer is only considered after an applicant has been denied for fall. So you can’t change into fall when you get summer…at least not without a material change to your application (major, campus, etc).

~Penn State is pretty much a numbers game. 2/3 GPA 1/3 Test scores and other factors.

~Smeal is one of the hardest, if not THE hardest not direct entry school to get into at PSU. You can get in DUS (undecided) and still get into Smeal your sophomore year. Difficulty Followed closely by Engineering.

~Nursing is a direct entry major at UP and is incredibly competitive. All nursing students leave UP campus for Hershey for one year.

~No one is IN a major until sophomore year unless you are in a direct entry major (nursing, golf course management, a few others). If you are accepted into Smeal or any other college you are actually PRE-MAJOR. Every major has entry to major requirements to fill. Some easier than others. Finance has the highest GPA requirement of all. Entry to major requirements can be found simply by googling the major you are interested in and “entry to major requirements PSU”.
For example, Smeal entry to major requirements: https://ugstudents.smeal.psu.edu/academics-advising/get-into-a-smeal-major/entrance-to-major-requirments

~Decisions will roll out near Thanksgiving, but usually only absolute yes and no’s will hear first. Most others will hear in December.

~An EA decision can also be a deferral to priority decision

~Priority applicants will hear by Jan 31

~Rolling applicants are the last to hear, usually mid-February and later.

~ If you don’t hear early, that means nothing. Plenty of people hear on the last day of decisions and get in. Hearing early, or hearing late, means nothing. PSU decisions are RANDOM for purposes of explanation (not completely random-it’s a process that is followed, but the outcome to US looks random. It is NOT first in, first out!)

~I’m repeating that last part…It is NOT first in, first out for applications and decisions. When you applied means nothing to when you will hear within your application category.

I think that’s it for now. I’m sure I’ll think of other things!

As for the admission… I read on the Reddit that there are couple of ppl got their acceptance from Penn State UP today. Guess they are probably the “top” pile (GPA and test score)

My Daughter got her acceptance this morning as well! OOS (NC) applied 2 weeks ago. Majoring in Chemical Engineering. Initially she had no interest in Penn State but I made her tour it since I grew up in PA. Once she set foot on campus she fell in love!
