Nope! My daughter is waiting for on that, too! Mine is going for forensic science. How about you ?
What a cool major! My son is premed. I have been unable to find any info on potential awards. Do you know if there is a $ range or timeframe?
We have not been able to figure that out either. I was assuming it was like up to $5000. Since they are notorious for giving almost no money, this will be our only hope. Hoping soon!
Good luck to your daughter! Please post back when you hear!
You as well!
My daughter is also going into Forensic Science! At the accepted student day I thought they mentioned maybe early/mid March for scholarship notification.
That’s so awesome ! We would need to get something from PSU to afford the OOS cost. PSU and Ohio State only ones left without merit help so far. Crossing fingers!
Does anyone know if the Provost Award has a financial need component? It is listed as a Merit Scholarship but is supposedly handled by both admissions and the financial aid department.
Would not think this is a merit award, in terms of academic only merit, as the criteria to renew it is a 2.0 GPA and 12 credits completed per semester. Seems like it is a general award to support OOS students at UP (they would not get the discovery award) or need based award at any campus which I assume would be for in state students.
Here for admitted students day tomorrow. Wow, the lines to get into several bars are over 100 people long. Is PSU over crowded??
-
Last weekend was THON and anyone dancing or involved had a 2-week dry period prior. They are finally going out.
-
it is State Patty weekend. Many out of town people come in for the weekend. In past years, many of the arrests on State Patty weekend are out of towners (students at different universities).
-
no classes Friday so kids have more time on their hands. (And probably a little bored).
Having said all that, State Patty weekend is not a good look. Just giving you some of the backstory why it is particularly crazy this year.
(State Patty weekend started when students were home for St. Patrick’s during spring break. It has continued as the weekend before spring break regardless of dates).
I did not even think about St. Patrick’s Day! Our admitted student day is on the 19th of March. The weekend after St. Patrick’s Day. We are coming in on Friday though. Guess we should expect it to be insane.
State Patty’s weekend is a very crazy weekend at Penn State and is, indeed, an overcrowded weekend. But as mentioned above, many non PSU students come for this. It’s not a huge alumni weekend as alumni generally avoid State Patty’s weekend!
That said, I am an alumni and I was in town visiting my freshman this weekend- I did scream out “WE ARE” at a tour group from my car - and my older daughter (also an alumni!) wanted to crawl under the front seat, lol.
I did not, however, venture into town. Lived and learned that lesson years ago. State Patty’s did not exist when I went to PSU - but god forbid the students missed a weekend party when spring break fell over st. patricks weekend - thus a new State College “holiday” was born…even if spring break isn’t over st. patricks day!
S22 is Rejected from Schreyer’s Honors. Does any one know the acceptance rate?
Mine was as well. They only take 300, so not high. I would assume thousands apply ?
The acceptance rate to Schreyer is under 10%. They get thousands of applications for few spots. Acceptances are also not based on grades or test scores as regular admission is. It’s based on essays, etc…
Noted the acceptance stats. I felt like any kid who wrote those 10 essays, deserved a Honors spot! It is hard to tell what they were looking for in the essays.
There are only 2000 students in all of Schreyer with about 300 students entering each year. Out of 40,000 students at PSU - it’s a small group. It’s a very difficult acceptance. I know many 4.0+ students who didn’t get in because it’s more arbitrary than stats. Getting into Penn State is a numbers game - Schreyer isn’t.
Got it. I understand their need to keep the Honors program elite and only select the very advanced ( aka mature kids). I know that for S22, the 10 essays were quite hard. He stretched himself in every way to write them, and I am sure that experience will come handy someway!
Yeah - those essays were no joke, particularly for a math/science kid like my future engineer. He also didn’t get honors. It was disappointing as his father was in the program. We are OOS (my husband was in-state then), 1550, NMF, 4.0 unweighted, good ecs, etc. - same as so many - but nothing life changing. Even so, we were really hoping for acceptance. The no makes our lives much easier as he is pretty focused on living in an honors dorm, for various reasons, and is in honors at Purdue. He got First Year Research at SUNY Binghamton, but not Scholars, so no honors dorm there either. Again, helps with the decision. Congrats to those who got in.
