Penn State or Bentley for Accouting?

Yes, Bentley does have a NUMBER if 5 year BS/MBA or BS/MS programs that might make it a good choice.

are those 5 years programs that big of an advantage? i plan on becoming a CPA, so does a MBA make a big difference?

you need an MBA to get a CPA, however, just because a school has a 5 year program doesn’t mean anything accept it’s going to be harder for you. The best way to do it is get ur BS then go to work and usually a company will pay for your MBA. Saying you have an MBA from Bentley is not a very prestigious thing. The most cost affective and most prestigious thing to do is get your BS from PSU then look into a prestigious MBA school like a BC or NYU if your from NY

Masskid, What?

I don’t think you need an MBA to get a CPA

well i’ve decided on penn state, thanks for your advice guys!

If money is not an issue, you won’t regret going to Bentley. This is one of the top schools in the nation for accounting and all of the big 4 accounting firms recruit actively from their campus.

Yes, if money isn’t an issue, I would pick Bentley over Penn State. Bentley specializes in accounting with their accounting lab and much more. It is much more nurturing than Penn State. I also LOVED the campus at Bentley and so did my son.

Penn state, as with all big state universities, try to weed out their accounting majors ( read as flunk them out). This isn’t true at Bentley. They really try hard to make them successful with tutoring, lots of accessibility of professors, accounting labs etc. I would bet that the grading at Bentley is a bit better too without having to water down the curriculum.

“Penn state, as with all big state universities, try to weed out their accounting majors”
Hah, so true Taxguy.

Go with Bentley on what taxguy said in post #28, you should get all the help possible to ensure you pass those upper level accounting classes. Otherwise you will be stuck.

ahhh now i’m starting to think that i shouldn’t have paid the $200 for penn state -_-"

Haha it’s okay, just devote a lot of time into your upper level accounting classes.

At my school, upper level financial accounting and managerial accounting are the toughest classes (the most people fail out of them) hence they are called “weed out classes”

Remember, if you are genuinely interested and dedicated in becoming an accountant, you should have no problems getting through it.

why would bug universities want to weed out their accounting majors?

ihatecollegeapps notes,"why would bug universities want to weed out their accounting majors? "

Response: There are many reasons.

First, accounting is a typical weed out major among most schools similar to engineering. It is just the way it has been for years.

Secondly, State universities have to make room for incomming transfers from other schools and especially from community colleges. Thus, flunking kids out is more encouraged than at other schools.

Third, Schools like Penn State have limited accounting openings especially at their upper levels. Schools like Bentley, that specialize in accounting, try admit and keep everyone.

Fourth: With state budget cuts, most state universtiies have less slots for majors then before. Private schools charge enough to not have to cut slots. Private schools can simply raise tuition, and get those that can afford it. State schools are subject to the vageries of state funding.

coming from someone who knows business very well up in massachusetts, not too many recruiters hire from bentley, they are known as arrogant graduates who don’t work hard because they think they are above entry level work, even though everyone starts off doing entry level work or basic first year work. I have talked to many people who recruit and conduct interviews. many of them simply say that they will not hire bentley kids. Go to penn state. It’s a much better school, Bentleys campus is not that nice trust me tax guy, I have stayed there a few times a few years ago, I hated it. I don’t know what bentley’s deal is but their students need to stop this rediculous arrogance because bentley is not even well known. Go outside mass or even inside mass and you’ll see that not too many have ever heard of bentley. Everyone knows Penn State, it’s a great school, go there.

Response: Are we talking about the same school? My son LOVED the campus and so did we. It was well-kept, beautiful with rolling hills and nice facilities such as gym and tennis courts. In fact, the library was one of the nicest libraries that any of us have seen!

As for recruting, I can’t speak for all kids nor can I speak for all recruiters, however, my most kids that my son knew had several job offers. Of courses, he knew a lot of accountant types. Thus, at least for accounting, You don’t seem to be correct Masskid.

I have also met a number of other Bentley kids. Admittedly this wasn’t a statistically valid sample, but they seems very nice and down-to- earth. I didn’t get a “stuck-up” feel from any of them.

If you think kids from Bentley are stuck up, just meet some kids at Yale or speak to some CMU administrators. Even at Syracuse, I saw more stuck- up kids than an Bentley.

Tax guy your info says you are from maryland, I am from mass and have a lot of knowledge about Bentley, I simply don’t see any thing special about it.

I don’t know if you’re aware of what we call the 3 B’s-Babson, Bryant, and Bentley. But out of the 3, Bentley doesn’t have a specialty. For example Babson is known for their entreprenurial education and their cut throat program (#6 in the nation in course load), and Bryant is known for their job placement- 98.7%, better than most iveys, their career services are top 10 in the nation.

If you think Bentleys campus is nice check out the other 2, Babson is amazing and Bryants campus has been placed in the top 10 in numerous categories in numerous magazines (#1 Safest campus according to 17 magazine)

Also Bentleys library doesnt even compare to Bryants. Bryant’s gym is a lot newer than bentley as well as nicer. and Babson’s library in my opinion is better than bentleys as well.

But thank you for proving my point-It’s known all over mass that bentley is one of the most stuck up schools, however, they are nothing compared to a yale like you said. Bentley is barely considered top 20 in mass nevermind any where in the national rankings

Also, accounting is the easiest field in Business to get a job in, simply because of the demand for it. The major is not easy don’t get me wrong. So I hope for Bentley’s sake that they did have a lot of accounting majors get jobs because if their job placement for accounting majors isnt in the 90s then its deff not a good school, look into that before you decide between them and penn state.

i see on the businessweek rankings that bentley is ranked #33 and penn state is ranked #38. but the recruiter survey ranks penn state as #9 while bentley is ranked #40, so this is a huge difference. but then their job placement grade are both A’s so i don’t know what to think about that. and bentley overall has better teaching quiality and facilities than penn state. and the average starting salary for both are relatively the same, penn state being $52,00 and bentley being $52,500.

so according to businessweek, bentley seems like the better overall business school. but then again this isn’t a ranking of accounting schools.

Forget rankings and especially forget what ANYONE says here. Check out both schools carefully. Check, out their facilities. Talk to kids in the program that you want to major in. If you have to, spend two days at each school.

Bentley and Penn State are VERY different places. One is more akin to a liberal arts college with a strong buisness focus and one is a big state university with a good business program. Again, check them out yourself.
