Penn State University vs. Miami University of Ohio

I'm stuck deciding between these two schools. I got into the business school at both. I'm well aware of Miami's 'preppy' reputation, and I'm sort of drawn to it. Also, Farmer's is ranked slightly better than PSU's Smeal School of Busineds.

On the other hand, I live in Pennsylvania and my parents really want me to go to PSU. They believe that I'll be able to find a job quickly due to it's size and number of alumni.

Opinions?

Actually, both are roughly at the same level and there may be an edge for career prospects from Smeal.
How much would each cost, out of pocket (after scholarships but befor any loan)?

Miami would be roughly 4,000 more since I’m out of state, but that’s not really a huge deal.

PSu’s got the largest alumni network in the country and has been ranked #1 for on-campus recruiting. It is, however, very large while UMiamiOH is smaller and more focused on the undergraduate.
At this point it really sounds like a personal preference.
Have you spent an overnight (admitted student days) at both? Read the campus paper. Attend both a large (lecture hall) class and a small “freshman seminar”-type class at both: where are students the most dynamic, interested in participating? Where is there a marge variety of “stuff to do” (cinema, activities, mall/skiing trips, buses to City Z, concerts… - do not take parties into account as both schools are famous for their parties)?
Then, go with your gut. :)

You’re drawn to Miami’s preppy reputation but not PSU? Have you visited here before?

I like that PSU is very diverse. I just know the classes and overall campus will be huge. I’m also scared that I’ll get bored at Miami.

I doubt that you would get bored at Miami. Although smaller than PSU, it is still medium large with about 15,000 undergads compared to almost 40,000 at PSU. Neither campus is in a big city, but Miami is less than a hour from Cincinnati. Penn State is far from everywhere.

Think about two things… the advantage of Miami is that it really pays more attention to undergraduate students; thus you will get more attention from professors. The advantage of PSU is its connections to East Coast businesses – if you want that! Miami has plenty of alumni, but they are midwestern not East Coast.

In short, I suspect you will enjoy your time a Miami more than at PSU. However, your career after college is important. Ask yourself “what part of the country do I want to work in?”
