Penn track star jumps to her death

"Madison Holleran, the University of Pennsylvania track star who died in Center City on Friday, struggled with the pressures of college and had recently seen a therapist, her father told a New York City newspaper." …

Very sad.

Penn track star's father says she dealt with depression in college

This is sad. God bless her and family…will be chatting with high school D about this (not the specifics of this but how important it is to give yourself a break).

My God how sad.

Just so sad and tragic…

It is very sad. There were two other Penn students who died over winter break. One was in a car accident with his parents in China, and the other was found dead in his off campus apartment, no cause of death yet.

The one who was found in his apartment has what I would think would make this a “covered story”. When he was very young, he and his brother came home and found both parents shot dead in their house. Yet that story is really not getting the same kind of traction as Madison’s death is. I get the fact that Madison being a suicide is part of it, but sadly, that happens many times without making national news.

I too have been obsessed with this story, and can’t figure out why this one is hitting me so hard and why it is getting so much publicity.

The Chinese student had a heart attack, not a car accident. I haven’t seen any coverage at all of the other case you mention, except one of the comments on a DP story about Holleran said that was a suicide, too.

The Holleran story gets attention because she was pretty and an athletic recruit, she killed herself in such a bizarre, public way, it’s a New York metropolitan area story because of where she grew up, and her father has talked to the press.

JHS didn’t the DP first report Kevin Zhao’s death as a car accident? Also, I did not see the update on the death of Pulkit Singh being ruled a suicide. The last I saw they said he was found dead, and that no foul play was suspected.

I went to high school with Josh Singh. Locally, everybody is talking about it, especially in connection with his parents. A teacher at our high school said he choked on his vomit in his sleep; I haven’t heard anything about suicide, and I have no idea where that teacher got that information.

I don’t know. I saw an article about Kevin Zhao that said cardiac arrest, and on the other I saw some comment that said (perhaps mistakenly) that it was suicide. I found a couple of stories about Josh Singh when I looked for them, and none of them said anything about suicide. But when young people die alone in their apartments with no foul play suspected, that and substance overdose are the two leading candidates. No matter what the cause of death is, all these stories are horribly sad.

My daughter told me about these recent deaths and I am saddened to hear of all this. As a parent you ALWAYS worry about your kids and this type of news really hits home and affects everybody.

My prayers are out to the families.

When my S was living at one of the High Rises, someone jumped to his death from the building. It is truly sad and I heard most colleges’ mental health depts are really busy.
