Does Penn have a network where students can download off of each other in a way? such as music, movies, videos, and all kinds of stuff? and is it safer than programs like limeware and kazaa?

yep, it's called ruckus, it's free, and legit - but only for music.

i just signed up for ruckus, but it has a very limited section (not to mention it appears to be laced with spyware/adware goodies). is there anything better? also hows bittorent at penn?

bt, like at any other place where you're on a monitored network, requires discretion.

i've not known people to use other sharing services.

I haven't found Ruckus limited at all...it's missing the Beatles, Zeppelin, Metallica, and a few other bands, but I've downloaded 1000+ songs from dozens of artists on it. Once you get the app that lets you put Ruckus songs onto your iPod, you're set.

how bout like movies or like tv shows or nething like that? does it have that at all? and should i stick to limeware or is ruckus better?

ruckus is virus / spyware / malware-free, and updated reasonably often...

no movies or tv shows on it, sorry

but resnet / penn video network have reasonably good offerings, too...

what resnet and penn network? and do you guys use ruckus alot...considering you can't sync it onto mp3 players?

i dunno man, Ruckus has a very large number of advertisements. my spyware software (Spy Sweeper) noticed that while Ruckus itself did not distribute malware, some of those ads do. nothing worse than data-mining cookies, but it still makes you wonder.

thelui, you can convert ruckus files to un-DRMed mp3 files by recording your soundcard's output. of course, that violates ruckus's terms of usage so, uh, you shouldn't do that ;)

there's another free and much nicer / faster / higher quality way of converting drm'ed wma files from ruckus to non-drm wma files, too.

resnet / penn video network is the penn tv service:

http://www.upenn.edu/video/lineup.html

http://www.upenn.edu/video/mc.html

ugh.... bittorrent works.

just use that, don't bother with ruckus or once you graduate you'll have to rebuild your music library

bittorrent - fast normally, blindingly fast if someone else on penn's network has the file. however, it's easy to track IPs on it, and if the RIAA/MPAA/**AA asks penn to cough you up, penn will

bittorent better or limeware? cuz i know limeware is spyware/adware free....is bittorrent spyware adware free?
