The comments at www.studentsreview.com make UPenn seem like a place full of stuck-up, unfriendly students. Philadelphia seems like a dangerous city for someone like me who comes from a small, quiet town. Finally (and this is not at all good for me), the social life at UPenn seems to revolve around drinking, frats, and parties. It is hinted that finding friends not interested in these things is not an easy task–unlike at places (for example) like Yale or Harvard. Can anyone tell me more about these things?

No, we're all stuck up and unfriendly. we'd rather you not come here. ;)

the social life at any college revolves around drinking and parties.

oh and since when did that become a bad thing?

mlee88: @ any college I'm sure you'll find stuck up people, and people you'll get along with. UPenn is a very big place, and you are highly likely to find your niche there no matter what! In terms of social life, yeah there'll be frat parties and drinking etc. but you def. dont have to partake in that to have a good time. One thing about Phildelphia is it's a vibrant city, you'll always find something to do, whether its going to the museum to look at art collection, going to South Philly for cheesesteaks etc, you'll always find something to do! Theres also various activities going on @ Penn such as movie/theatre nights etc!
And as far as Student Review goes, I'm sure you'll find negative comments about other schools that could be discouraging! Don't let student review hinder you from applying to Penn!

Since we hit number 4 in the rankings. drives me nuts. I didn't drink before I got to college, and getting corrupted sure was fun.

Well, I didn't say frats/drinking are necessarily bad things... but they aren't things I enjoy and certainly not something I want to take up. How central are frats to the social life at Penn?

How do you know you're not gonna enjoy going to frat parties and getting drunk? Have you partied and gotten drunk before, lol? I'm just kidding. I'm sure the biggest frat scene is at Dartmouth where 51% of students are in frats or sororities. So I'm pretty sure that here at Upenn, the numbers are less than 50%. If you look at it this way, there are more than 5000 ppl not in frats or sororities.

I believe it's around 30% for Penn

Ive talked about snobs on another thread of mine and we all pretty much thought that upenn was one of the less snobby places if not the least. We also concluded that, yeah, wherever you go you will always have some stuck up people.

www.campusdirt.com is a better site than students review. Anyone can post on students review; on campusdirt they require a school email so it is actually students giving the reviews on the school...

any ivy league school will have your rich snobby types, they are expensive private schools with half of their students coming from private schools, but I think most are pretty down to earth regardless of where they come from.

Yeah, talking to quite a few people from/going to Penn already, I like it when I'm pleasantly surprised that the down-to-earth fun kid I was talking to is hella loaded.

It's a good sign.

I'm trying to go
