People on CC keep saying they self study a lot and get 5s, but HOW do you self study?

Hi, so yeah I'm a beginning self studier and well, I was just wondering how exactly do you self study?

Like do you just read from the prepbook, or also read it from the textbook? Do you take notes when your reading the prep book or textbook? Do you reread the material again after a chapter, highlight stuff, take notes on the margins, or instead of rereading by chapter, once you're done with the whole book, you start all over again and reread?

And when do you start taking practice tests? And do you go to other sites to self study and whatnot?

Example:

I'm in a WHAP class but our teacher can't teach (in fact today he wasted the whole entire class time talking about NPR -.-). So I recently bought a Barron's WHAP book and PR WHAP book, which book should I use? Or should I combine both? Should I reread stuff from both books? :(

I'm also going to order AP Pysch and APBIO prepbook soon (unsure about AP bio but I'll try)!

for AP Pysch: I'm gonna order PR so how should I approach self studying with this?

For Ap BIO: Where do I start? SHould I check out a textbook or is Cliffs fine enough? WHat other web resources are there/available?

If you are an expereinced self studier, a lot of tips and advice would help me a lot and I'm pretty sure for the other people that are reading this as well. :)

Thank you!

bump? please, if you any experience, advice would be appreciated! :D

I would use a WHAP textbook like Traditions and Encounters by Bentley, etc. (I used that one in my class), and then use PR to review leading up towards the test. Barron's is probably overkill, because the textbook provides the foundation for details and such and PR provides the framework for understanding everything in context. I can't comment on any of the other tests as I didn't take them. And you should take my advice with a large helping of salt because I took the actual course with a decent teacher and didn't self study at all (morning of test!)

Ok thank you! We use the earth and its people and I don't like the way the book is set up...

I probably would like barrons because I prefer overkill vs. underkill if you get what I mean, the more knowledge the better.... I hate our textbook with a deep fiery passion...

and our teacher is terribad

But can anybody else give me tips on the other exams?

Like, are you guys seriously or are you just exaggerating because I went to another post and this guy only studied for 2 NIGHTS on APenvironmental science and GOT A 5!!!

Like is it honestly that easy or do you think they were just lying? Because then why would they even need a class for a whole entire year to teach it?

I just need tips and advice on how to self study and whatnot... like what's the most effective way to prepare for the exam without a teacher...

Well most don't self study the courses that harder tests. Most only do the easy tests.

When I self study for a test, all I do is read the review book. I can sometimes try to checkout a textbook from my school, but I usually don't have the time to read it all. But my memory is pretty good and I can recall something after seeing it once or twice usually.

Each person has different abilities and you have to find your own way to study.

Read prep book, annotate prep book, read prep book again, look at questions from CB, take test, get 5s (and 4s...).

Depends on how good you are at taking tests... for some people, all they need is a prep book and two weeks of time. Some need copious notes, textbook highlighting, flashcards, etc... Remember that the test is ridiculously curved, and you should try a practice test to see where you are at in the beginning.

Oh i shee, well I just ordered ap pysch, ap macro/micro econ, and ap bio stuff...

do you think those are too much to self study in one year? if so, what course should I not self study?

If you're motivated it seems that you can manage. Students in France, for example, study up to 10 subjects in one year. I'm sure we can manage three ;).

Do sample questions you can get from the internet and do problems from your book. Math is all about practice.

My S self-studied for AP Micro/macro. He used a DVD course from The Teaching Company, followed by text books, where he worked through the chapters, and then the AP Review books at the very end. Got a 5 and a 4. D is self studying AP computer science, has a text book with java stuff on the computer and will then go through the AP review book.

oh dang, how does he have the time to self study? I'm pretty sure both your children are pretty busy....

I'm just worried that I'll get overconfident and fail... and yet so many people on CC claim they study for just a month or less and a get a 5. How do they do it? o.O

AP Psych: Not sure, I'm self-studying and want to know too...

AP Bio: Eek! Well good luck, I'll pray for you. I took it last year, it was difficult. You can probably get a 5 self-studying if you have a tutor and read the Barron's book thoroughly

Tip: Focus on plants, hormones, body systems, genes, proteins... Hm, i can't remember what else
