So I visited ucsb today and absolutely loved it. I have a question about the other stundents though...are the peoples attitudes there the same as in high school? Are people shallow or ******-y? I felt kind of intimidated today by everyone, it could just be because it's only my second time at ucsb.

My sister went to UCSB for 4 years, and I’m heading off for UCSB next year, and I can tell you that you can find the best people at this college. Sure, there are going to be jerks, but there are so many wonderful, down to earth people attending, you’ll be able to find plenty of people worth befriending.

Hey.

I was at SB today as well as yesterday. No one really seemed shallow or mean, in fact, i asked two people for directions after getting lost at the end of some tours (lol) and they were more than glad to point me and my parents in the right direction. They were even willing to walk us across the campus to where we wanted to go.

I’m not saying that the school doesnt have shallow or mean people, i’m just saying that I did not run into any in my two days at ucsb. =D

People seemed pretty nice here…

I talked to people in loads of deparments and clubs and the fencing team, they all seemed to nice to talk to.

Plenty of nice people as shown above. But also plenty of asshoes. Just two days ago I was rolling in IV on my motorcycle and some jerks were throwing water balloons at people, including me. Also plenty of snobby bitces

But yea, nice people too.

I was working at the fencing booth! lol. But ya college is nothing like high school. Sure there’s a decent chance you will get hit with water balloons once during your freshmen year while walking in IV but its all in good fun. Remember, everyone is happy to be rid of the drama of high school and finally begin the process of growing up now that they are no longer living at home. Like someone mentioned there will always be a d-bag here and there but generally, I think you will find people very helpful and friendly.

Generally everyone on campus is nice, but strangers in IV can be *******s somestimes(drunk?). But if you know people there, then of course they’ll be the nicest people. My experience here I haven’t really came across someone who is a dick yet, and met only the nicest people ever(even a phD chem student dressed as mario partying in IV with my friends visiting)

Lucas2544, I stopped by your both and really liked it. Will join fencing

I totally understand. I got waitlisted at my first choice, UC Davis, and I’m seriously considering UCSB, but I get the vibe that UCSB is full of upper-middle class stuck up white kids and that there’s no diversity. I also haven’t spent a great deal of time in Socal and I just don’t know if it’s really right for me.

Ahhh that’s so funny! I wanted to go to Davis too.

you don’t have to be a freshman to get water ballooned is my point.

wow… uh i want to go to sb, but was waitlisted and got into davis. i sent in sir for davis however, so that doesn’t really help you guys who are waitlisted… and pple who have sb as their 2nd choice but send in their sir doesn’t help me :(

We should trade then I can go to Davis and you can go to SB.

Recently took my daughter to visit USCB, and the people/students seemed very nice. We must have looked lost as one young student came up and asked if we needed help. She was very nice and got us headed in the right direction. All encounters with students were very positive … But, if you step into the bike lane in between classes, you WILL get run over!

Contrary to popular belief, UCSB is one of the most diverse UCs financially… or at least that’s what they told me at orientation last summer. There are always gonna be jerks and there are always going to be really nice people that you meet. While I’ve been here, no one’s been a jerk to me and if they’re not friendly, at least they don’t bother me. When you move in, you shouldn’t have to fear anyone being a complete dick to you.

UCSB seemed way more diverse than UCI when I visited. UCI was literally all white and Asian. I only saw two people who weren’t the entire day. At UCSB there where a lot more Hispanics, especially.

That’s cool cuz this one guy told me that UCSB was the college with the least amount of hispanic diversity, but i guess he was wrong.

I had the same discussion recently with someone I know. I remembered seeing this CC posting on 10 unique facts about UCSB.

Number 5 is about diversity–(Did you know) UCSB is one of the most diverse UCs? According to Fall 2009 data, the freshman class has the 3rd highest percentage of under-represented minorities in the entire UC system (after Riverside and Merced), and ranking 2nd in % of Native Americans, 3rd in % of Hispanics, and 4th in % of Blacks in the UC system. The fall 2009 freshman class breakdown is as follows:
White: 44.7%, Hispanic: 24.9%, Asian: 20.7%, African American: 4.0%, American Indian: 1.1%

Yeah, UCSB’s demographics more closely matches California’s demographics as a whole than any other UC
