These people tend to apply to most selective schools.. but have they succeeded in the past? What kind of schools do these people end up going to? Is anyone out there with such stats that got into top 20 schools?

you see,, some people with 2.8 GPA got into Caltech or MIT// but they are minorities,,if you are not one of them,, its hard to get into good schools even with high scores on SAT/ACT. Colleges like to see you work hard in a long race,, SATs? you can study for it in a month and score well.. my brother studied 2 weeks and got perfect last yr.,

wooaaaaah that is good...is your brother realllly smart?

nah,,, i dont think so.. but if he starts studying he doesnt come out of his room... he doesnt sleep either,,, because of him i was suffering too.. i share room with him,, and light is on every night i cant sleep but well now hes gone to college..

This thread is like attack of the people who don't know how to type. Heyyoyo, you don't have to use 2 of every punctuation mark, okay? We understood the first time.

Having a low GPA/high SAT score spells doom. It means you're lazy. See, having a high GPA can definitely compensate for a poor SAT score, but it just doesn't work the other way around. Those people generally do not get into top schools. All admissions officers will tell you that your transcript (aka, GPA and course selection) is THE most important part of your app. If it's weak, your whole app just won't stand.

^^^^ I wouldn't think it spells doom.

And again, saying they're "lazy" in general doesn't mean they don't try now, or haven't tried before. Just because they don't have a great GPA doesn't mean they don't care...it's really the best they could do.

I think high GPA/low SAT can spell doom in the same way, if you want to be fair. A 4.0/1300 new SAT won't really get you anywhere.

I'm not doubting that adcoms see it this way, but the reality is that that's not always the truth. And if you haven't noticed, the SATs hold their own weight (albeit a little less than GPA) when an applicant is being reviewed. It's not uncommon that a 2.8/2000 applicant may get accepted to a fine university. Maybe not ivy, but I was never speaking of the ivies anyway.

Oh, and to the OP: what kind of stats are you talking about? 3.2/2250 or 2.6/2400? <--- along those lines.

Well, I have 3.5 UW with 2 C's in math/2200/34. I don't think I'm lazy. I transferred to another school after my dad was laid off, and out of some insane rage, I started taking the most rigorous curriculum (13 AP's by graduation). I was thinking about applying to top 12-25 schools, but I'm rather discouraged now. There aren't many people on this site whose GPA and SAT are totally unbalanced. What to do, what to do.

Well I think if you show improvement it won't matter as much. I unfortunately slacked off first two years and had GPAs of 86 and 88 for each successive year. Then I start trying and last year (junior) I got a 93 GPA, and expecting much higher this year. I just wish I'd tried harder since the beginning, I'd be at least in the top 10.

Oh well. Nobody in my school has beaten my SAT, so I'll stay satisfied with that for now.

can i get into most state schools (specifically delaware, James madison, rutgers, and temple) with a 1310 SAT score(770M 540 V) and a 2.9 GPA?

my grades show an upward trend from all C's in H/ regular classes freshman year to all B's in mostly AP classes this(senior) year

class rank is 26%

Temple = yes.

Everything else = toss-up.

I'm applying to the same schools, sans Delaware. Good luck on your apps ! :)

I think all you can do is apply, instead of speculate if you're not going to get in or not. I'm in the same boat as you.. Rank is in the second decile somewhere, but I've improved in the last year and some. Above average SAT scores- not extraordinary though.. so I've been kind of apprehensive about the decision letters in the spring. Anyways, good luck and I think you should just apply, but make sure you have a good assortment of safeties too.

One can get accepted to a top tier school with a 3.5 or lower GPA and a 33+ ACT score or SAT equivalent. Many schools look very closely at your essays, recs, and EC's as well.
