Performing at Vassar for a non-major

Hi! I'm a senior girl in the process of applying for colleges and for about a year now Vassar has been near the top of my list, fighting Brown for first choice.

Vassar sounds like a near-perfect fit for me, but I do have one concern. I have a passion for theatre and I want to continue to act for as long as possible, but I don't know if I'll major in it. If I do, it would be as a double major, or I might just minor in it. But not getting a degree in it at all is a strong possibility.

My worry is that at a school with such a renowned theatre department it will be too competitive for a non major to get any good stage time. I'm not saying I want or need to be the star of every mainstage show, but I do want a chance to undertake challenging performance opportunities (ie more than just spear carrier #3). I know I could challenge myself just by taking acting classes, which I definitely will do, but I'm addicted to the thrill of performance. So I want to have a shot at that.

Is this a legitimate concern? Is there anyone who can tell me about the availability of performance opportunities for non-majors? any input would be greatly appreciated.

I attended an info session and campus tour earlier this year and they said that auditions are open to the entire school even for those who aren’t theatre majors (I plan to double major in Int’l Relations and Theatre so the theatre aspect of Vassar definitely stands out to me.) Good luck with everything!

Not an issues whatsoever. Your talent, only, will determine your part. Also, remember that SOOOO much of Vassar theater life is outside of the department. There are plenty of plays and parts to go around. Leadership of many of these groups are not majors or even involved at all in the department.

I’m pretty sure there is no Drama minor (correlate) here.

Also, most of the shows happen outside the drama department in student theatre organizations. This semester, there are nine or ten shows by student theatre groups (open auditions) and 2 shows by the drama department that one could audition for in the beginning of the year, and even those you can’t audition for unless you’ve taken at least a beginning drama class.
